    Ryder Cup Trash Talk Thread
Six huge tournaments have been held on the U.S. Tour in the build-up to the Ryder Cup and three were won by a Fijian, one by an Irishman, one by a Swede and one, on Sunday, by Colombian Camilo Villegas.

Hows your team shaping up chaps?

Won't get much pro-USA PGA trash talk from me EM. Yanks got lazy over the years out on the links in so many ways, one of them being they didn't need to win to live high on the hog. They forgot how to play match play in my opinion. That and the fact I don't get into all the wrapping yourself in a flag stuff when it comes to sports.

Being picked to play for your country or region should be considered a huge honour, unfortunately I think money has tarnished that notion.

Strange how many consider the Euros a huge fave, the bookies sure don't. Currently 5Dimes has Europe -117/ US -103 with a tie being a push. Even laying 1/2 a point with Europe only gets you -101.

Also, the Euros haven't come into the US as big faves like this in awhile. The pressure will be squarely on Harrington and Garcia, can they handle it?

Lets see if the US becomes more of a "Team" without Tiger. I think him being out may actually help them. Let's beat those Limies!! (that was for Mike)

Yeah, it should be an honor, and the money surely is a factor.

I know some old duffers -- Yes, there are people I refer to as being 'old' -- who say the event lost some of its luster and attraction when it moved from being USA vs. Great Britain/Ireland to USA vs. Europe 25 years or so ago. Not sure if that's a viable reason, but it is true that especially the last 10 years or so, a lot of Americans are tired of having to seemingly take on the entire world on both politics AND sports.

I love match play personally. Reminds me a little of March Madness -- win today and play tomorrow, or go home. Been a while now, but I went to the 1993 US Amateur at Champions in Houston, saw three days of some great golf. Loved how we could just walk down the fairway with the golfers. That was the year before Tiger began his three-year streak in that tournament. The fact my pop's house was along the Par 5, #5 also made it a fun event.

Harrington and Garcia can handle it, I'm more concerned about Graeme McDowell and Oliver Fisher.

You make a fair point, Mickleson is probably a much better 'star' to have encouraging others than Tiger.

Im not sure facing Europe every two years is that big a deal is it? Theyre playing in Kentucky.

Events like this need to remain a part of the sporting landscape, one Ryder Cup contains more entertainment than 10 Fed Ex cups ever will. When money can cause a situation whereby you have a play off system in golf and the winner is known before the last event, something is seriously wrong.

Agreed the event should stay; we tend to dismiss some traditions too easily, both here in the US and elsewhere. I'd really love to see an annual big-honkin' match play event. Something like take the top 128 in the world in a bracket style system, rotate it to courses all over the place.

Youve got the world matchplay at the start of the year but heres what I would do for the play offs to guarentee interest.

The top 132 or however many go into the hat and it's drawn out on live tv, whoever you draw you play, matchplay style. This draw would take place after every round so in theory Tiger could play Phil in the final or the first round.

Oooh, a blind draw. Excellent idea.

Will be interesting to see if Harrington and Mickelson match up next week in singles. Also wouldn't mind seeing Sergio against Leonard.

I think Europe takes this Ryder Cup, we got Tiger sidelined and one of the weakest teams in years against one of the strongest Euro teams in years and we were losing even when that wasn't the case, also the fact that the Euros are more team sport fanatics (holdover from soccer maybe?) whilst the Americans favor the individual athlete, I heard the Euros go to dinner together etc on the Euro tour and the Americans have nothing to do with each other until Ryder Cup time, hell they say Tiger's closest friend on tour is European Jesper Parnevik, go figure (also Mark O' Meara who has pretty much moved full-time to the Champions tour)

Lee Westwood actually said he still laughs when he goes back to his room after dinner and sees all the room-service trollys lining both sides of the corridor when he plays on the PGA tour.

Hard to make players care about the 2 year old FedEx Cup when they've been playing the Masters and Open Championship for 100+years.

It's certainly pretty dumb to have something called the playoffs and have the winner decided before the last tourney. That happens here with Colombian soccer sometimes. It's odd to me as a gringo with our super bowls etc.
