          They were $87 this year.

Someone has to pay for your sewage to get cleaned, your streets to be paved and have lights and your kids to go to school so you can have some athletes going to college and then turning into to pros so you can continue your gambling addiction.

Just paid property tax bill on my car the other day. Car is worth ~$10k, and the bill was almost $400. Also had to pay $12 interest because I forgot about it and paid it one day late.

Bullshit all these cost are in your utilities bill and the price you pay for your lot includes cost for the install. It's all the other bastards who have kids that think they're entitled to a free education, the worthless police, fire and city employee's as the reason for the outrageous property taxes.

And who pays for the chemicals, filters and the electricity to treat your sewage so it can be released back to the rivers and lakes in your community? Do you take a dump only the day you buy the house, eh?

well, it's true that property taxes would be lower if there were no fire department or police, and no public schools... those do seem to be the bulk of the spending in most places.

I guess in most places though, you can make a choice to live in a lower-tax, lower-service town though, if you don't want your money being spent on that kind of stuff...

I'm right with you moneywinner, I paid 7,000 and I get nothing, no sewage, garbage, nothing. I do own about 45 acres of farm land but the tax on that was 2000 and the other 5000 is for the 5 acres that my house sits on.

the bulk in spending is fvckin handouts to the "less fortunate"

there's plenty of income for the government to operate. but when government encourages dependency and overcommits, its not going to have enough income to provide adequate services. so how does it get more income?

                                              inflation tax

government gets waaaaaay more than they need to operate a "full service" town

the bulk in spending is fvckin handouts to the "less fortunate"

there's plenty of income for the government to operate. but when government encourages dependency and overcommits, its not going to have enough income to provide adequate services. so how does it get more income?
Sorry, when I said "bulk of the spending" I meant solely with respect to property tax revenue. That is, that most property tax revenue is spent on your local police and fire department and public schools. And if you want less of that stuff, you can often move to a neighboring town and get less of it, and correspondingly pay less property tax.

There are obviously some expenses that are arguably necessary which other levels of government provide, like defense. Social Security is a huge expenditure, which is really directed more at old people in general rather than less fortunate.

I don't know. I'm not sure you can really blame the high taxes on handouts. Some ill-advised, expensive, and pointless programs, sure.. but I'm not sure the purely redistributive effects of the current tax and spending setup really hurt the average joe more than an alternative.

                                                wealth redistribution hurts everyone

my point was that the average joe is extremely over taxed to start with. (before having to pay property taxes)

sure tax the rich, encourage government dependency for the poor and bribe their vote. and as more and more become the government's dependent, less and less rich people are sticking around to pay for it. so taxes for the average joe rises.

the same applies to businesses. corporate tax rates are a joke. and that only gets passed along into the price of goods and services. but more and more businesses are saying f that, and moving elsewhere.

same applies to small businesses. over taxed, over regulated, less opportunities to add to the economy.

so why is our economy in a recession??
                                                over spending, over commitment

and there's plenty of blame to go around for it (global affairs ie dumb wars being one)
but the biggest factor is over commitment to government dependents

we barely get .50 for every dollar we earn and then we have to use that money to pay legit taxes like property taxes.
