In an interview with 8 News Now in Las Vegas this week, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made it clear that he does not support the idea of online gambling in the United States.
Romney, who is visiting Nevada ahead of this weekend's state caucus, said he's opposed to online gaming because of the "social costs and people’s addictive gambling habits.”
Last October, Romney vowed he would take a serious look into online gambling, telling the Las Vegas Sun that he would have his mind made up on the issue before the caucuses came around.
Romney's view opposes that of rival candidate Ron Paul, who told Face to Face's Jim Ralston this week that "people should be free and they should make their own decisions and there should be no regulation of the Internet.” Paul has long been a supporter of the right to gamble online, a position that should help him in the Nevada caucuses.

Ralston also interviewed Romney and asked him about legalized online gaming. Romney does not support it and commented as such.

“No, I’m not (a supporter). Gaming has a social effect on a lot of people. I don’t want to increase access to gaming and feel that we have plenty of access to gaming right now through the various casinos and establishments that exist. In some states, there are lotteries that are used to fund their schools and budgets and so forth, and I don’t think online gambl … gaming would encourage or improve that setting.”

The only aspect of Romney’s position that could be perceived as sympathetic with tens of millions of American poker players is that he corrected himself and referred to the matter as “online gaming” instead of “online gambling.” As he is the Republican frontrunner, that’s not very encouraging.

Former Congressman Newt Gingrich and Senator Rick Santorum have yet to address the issue of online gambl … gaming.

Better vote Ron Paul. There's no reason to have to choose between a "douche and a turd sandwich" if Paul were to get true nomination. Even if he doesnt win but gets a lot of delegates, he can force Romney to incorporate some of his views into the platform. Perhaps even to back off of his anti-online gambling stance. And we all know Romney will flip flop on anything of it's to help him get elected. Vote for Paul and get your friends to as well.

There is little opportunity for Online Gambling legislation to be enacted with a MORMON as the president.

If you vote for Romney you are pretty much saying you want to wait at least 4 years for any type of gambling legalization nationwide. Statewide, possibly, but nationwide - no shot.

Also, Obama and crew shutting down oversea sites is not that ridiculous, millions of dollars going overseas and not being taxed. If you are the government and one of your responsibilities is to tax revenues, shutting down a site which is limiting your ability to do that is not that crazy, it actually makes some sense. It would make a lot more sense if they legalized it and taxed it. Good luck with a Mormon president signing that bill

Empire and others, do you guys think Romney dislikes online gaming enough to veto a bill that passed Congress? I sure hope not...but then again, it's really not that bad right now. I do feel bad for the residents of several states, who have made it near impossible to play i.e. Washington State.
