Don Cornelius -- who famously created "Soul Train" was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, CA home this morning ... and law enforcement sources tell us it appears he committed suicide.

We're told cops discovered the body at around 4 AM PT. Law enforcement sources tell us ... Cornelius died from a gunshot wound to the head and officials believe the wound was self-inflicted.
Soul Train Line Dance was maybe the best invention ever.

He was 75. Depression and poor health can be rough. A man with all of his fame, money, and body of work to do this? It's very sad.

He's a pioneer. A legend in bringing soul music to television. He had on mostly African American groups but also all types of people. He made people's careers and adjusted to the different trends or "in thing" as each decade passed by.

He definitely gave African-Americans equal ground on "what to watch or dance to on television".....very entertaining---He hosted "Soul Train" where the motto was "Peace, Love, and Soul"
