Can someone please explain "rollover" to me?

All these contests that offer supposed "prizes" deposited into a sportsbook account always mention 3x rollover or 5x rollover...

Are they saying that in order to ACTUALLY RECEIVE any money you need to WAGER it FIVE times (or whatever) SUCCESSFULLY in order for it to be withdrawable????

If so, these things seem like a scam to me!! Anyone agree?

i.e.: $100 deposit + $20 =$120 The $20 is probably from the bonus that gives you a x5 rollover. $120 x 5(rollover)= $600 in wagers you have to do, before you can withdraw any dough, from the account.

Follow some advice from other posters: If you throw $100 in to account, never bet more than $5 a wager. Yes, you'll take, what seems like, "forever", to be able to withdraw, but you'll get there if you got discipline.
Other posters will say, never bet more than 1-2% of your bankroll, very smart, if you want to work off your rollover.
Or if you want, make 6 $100 bets in a row, see where you're at. Of course that's not gonna work, unless if you're really lucky. The books want you to bet all crazy, and drain your accounts with bulky wagering.

Thanks, Darrell... I'm still sort of confused, though.

First off, I was referring to contests. You're referencing a bonus to your deposit -- as far as I know, those often don't have rollovers anyway, they just give you 15 or 20%. (At least, SIA does.)

So I meant like a "contest" where you "win" $500, but it has the 5x rollover. So you just have to make $2,500 in bets in that case you're saying? Win or lose?

It's really f'n confusing. I don't like it.

Well yeah, these contests are usually, free. You'll play against a bunch of people too. Free $ is gonna be a rollover.
When you pay, you withdraw; free $, a rollover.
No scam, this is normal.
