Is There a Better, or More Famous, Fight Song than Notre Dame's?

Cheer, cheer for ol' Notre Dame . . .

C'mon now, boys. Even if you aren't a fan of the I-Rich you know your heart beats a bit faster when the Golden Domers rush out into the field to the stirring melody of their song!

I doubt there's a better sports fight song anywhere in the universe. I'm surprised the Gemans in WWII didn't adopt it, so feet stomping is it.

On Wisconsin is also pretty good, but still not in the same league of the South Benders.

BTW, the ubiquitous Irish fans (of which I'm not one, I root for the team I have a bet on that week) can really throw a tailgate party.

I was at one in the Meadowlands (NJ) years ago, when Irish were playing Navy. Cripes, cars in the parking lot from all over the East Coast, even some from Deep South and West Coast. One from Canada too.

Irish Republic flags all over parking lot too, and some folks collecting money for an Nortehern Ireland "charity," ---- clearly an Irish Repulican Army front.

The portable kitchens would have made a master chef proud. And if you sported ND regalia you could eat almost at any of the lavish spreads.

Sure, I know that at other big football factory schools you see something similar. But this was a really varied sight to see, a sea of green.

Irish fans are crazy. It's a religion. I knew a guy from NYC (Jewish) who was such a huge ND fan that when he got married he took his bride on a honeymoon to South Bend, where they loaded up on souvenirs.

As far as college football goes, it doesn't get any better than UM's "Hail to the Victors".

The USC March of the Trojans or Rockytop are contenders, but Notre Dame and Michigan are the tops in the fight song category.

The tune is permanently pressed into my memory genes as the Irish-dominated high school i attended used it as their own fight song.

Naturally, smart-ass adolescents weren't going to leave it alone. So the versions I heard had lines like this:

NOW LET US HEAR A BIG NOISY CHEER
YOU MAKE THE TOUCHDOWNS, WE'LL DRINK THE BEER.
SEND THOSE FRESHMEN OUT FOR GIN,

I will give this to the Domers, tho.

Unlike a lot of football factories, they don't schedule Div 1-AA teams in early season, to practice on. (And i don't shiv a git what the NCAA wants us to call them, it will always for me be Div 1-A and Div 1-AA.)

Of course, this year ND leads off playing San Diego State, which is very nearly Div 1-AA.

May be Long's last year. Aztecs have had a long succession of bad ADs, who don't know how to hire a head coach. They should try to grab a good one from the "cradle of coaches", the MAC. Or see if Pat Hill of Fresno may be interested. Or even Dick Tomey, who once fashioned a great defense in the Arizona desert.

The Russian National Anthem is the #1 fighting song.
