        It's like if you go to a nice sandy beach, and you're at the water's edge as a wave is receeding.

        If you tried to run on the part of the beach that is wet, that sand is firm and compact, and is easy to run on.

        As you get away from the beach, the sand becomes softer and softer. Now you have to really work hard to pick up your legs from the surface of the sand.

        The track variant helps define how the surface was that day, how difficult it was for the horse to pick its legs up from whatever condition the surface was in.
