How to spot a winning gambler at the track
I went to the morning workouts at Del Mar last saturday, and i noticed four old guys (railbirds), standing on the rail watching the horses do the morning workouts. I got there right when they were discussing and handicapping the days card. So i anonymously stood next to them, and pulled out my program, and started cirlcling who they liked. And lo and behold they picked 7 winners out of the 9 race card. Its suffice to say i had a great day. Now what drew me to them immediately, was that all four guys had toothpicks in their mouths. All successful horse bettors always have a toothpick in their mouth the entire day at the track. Look for the guys with the toothpicks and follow them to the window, and you usually will have a decent day!........................

The toothpick is huge. Often times something- papers, programs and the like stuffed in the back pocket is a tell tale sign of a wiseguy as well.

When your using the toothpick, you gotta really move it around in your mouth, from side to side, turn it upside down, you have to be very animated with it.

I've never seen a successful bettor at the track and I hung out at one for 2 years

Those who go there religiously (AM workouts) should be sought out for their insight. Take note, it does not hurt to offer them something to eat or drink PRIOR to you having a discussion with them.

                Betti:

Keep your eyes out for the guys with the active toothpicks, something in the back pocket, and low hanging bi-focals.

90% of the time these guys know what they are doing.

But like Poet said, they guy with the active toothpick is a dead giveaway for a guy with tons of inside info in his head.

THEY ARE ALL IN WORSE SHAPE THAN ALL OF US IN LIFE. WE'RE ALL WINNERS, COMPARED TO THESE GUYS.. THEY ARE ALL BROKE AND HAVE NOTHING GOING FOR THEM..

The winners are the one's in the white shirt and bow ties that are selling you the tickets. The losers are the guys that show up with clipboards at the beginning of every season, a few weeks later they are all gone, only their memory endures....

Nicky anybody with a brain knows that a very and i mean very small percentage of everyday horse bettors are successful. This thread was started about an observation and opinion i had about a certain type at the race track. Were not looking for a gambling lesson! Stop highjacking my thread..

Might be successful if they rigged/had truly inside info, other than that no way to overcome that mammoth bite the track takes out, pools are already microscopic nowadays and they swipe 20 % of a micro pool, think about it like this two horses run in a race and they're about even, one degen puts a 100 bucks on horse 1 other degen puts a 100 bucks on horse 2, horse 1 wins and the guy who bet it wins 60 on a 50/50 chance for betting 100 (after track takes out 40 bucks out of 200 pool), truly impossible to beat that kinda vig, literally as tough or tougher to beat than slots imo

                                    Nicky Santauro,

Lot's of disagreements with you, so here goes ...

Hanging out at the track does not make one a loser if they are there for a legit purpose. When a person is there, they can speak with jocks, trainers, stewards, ground crew, etc.

Sorry, my wife has not left me and goes with myself to the track. A wife who leaves her spouse because he's at the track is one who was going to leave them anyway so the track portion becomes void. We each handicap the races alone and compare selections when they match, we have a play, otherwise we each play our own.

Your no so smartness is showing when you state there are not sharp guys at the track.

There's a roof over our heads, food to last two or three months in the freezers, enough dry goods to go 5 or 6 months without worry of running out. The vehicles are debt free. Our other bills are paid two to three months in advance based on past years budgeting. Don't bring that nobody can or wins at the track nonsense around here because I know differently.

The only way to spot a winning gambler at the track is by his shoes. If he wears $200 shoes he is probably a winning gambler.

Its a large vig, but you aren't betting odds set by sharp linemakers...you're betting odds set by the public. I'm not saying its easy, but I have known winners.
