SBR Non Sports Related Adds That Pop Up
I by no way am computer savvy. Something is odd. I did a yahoo or google search about home heating oil costs. Wouldn't you know a SBR add pops up when I come back to SBR for the lowest home heating costs.

If this was the first time it happened, I would think it was a coincidence. Last week I was researching a Redskins player for fantasy football and a freaking add popped up on here with his freaking name. Something isn't right.

So now adds are popping up for furnaces. Geez, furnaces need oil to run.

Does SBR somehow track where the hell I've been on yahoo or google?

I'm guessing that blocks the adds. Can you explain though how or what tracks where I've been, relays it to this add things so it knows where I've been?

Isnt necessarily SBR, but the way adverts are generated and seem to be customized to everyone depending on your general internet search history.

I dont have a clue how they do it, most likely something to do with cookies or your google search history (or whatever search engine you use) but something is defiately being tracked as I have also found it odd the amount of similar adverts I have that seem to either stuff i have been searching for, or similar websites to the ones I use on a regular basis - and not just on SBR, but in general on the internet.

Even Amazon does something a bit similar - try doing an amazon search for something out of the ordinary or unusual for you and within a few days or a week you will likely have an email from then saying they have a special offer on whatever it was you were searching for, or at the very least an email saying "Are you looking for something in our Toaster store - if so have a looks at these"

You would be amazed at the information that Google has on you. Google also owns various advertising networks (not just adsense/adwords).

If you're surfing the net while logged into any site such as google, yahoo, msn, facebook, etc., then you're being tracked. Clearing cookies will only help you if you're not logged into various websites. Even if you're not actively using google, yahoo, msn, facebook, etc., if you didn't log out of those sites, you're more than likely still being tracked.

                            This is the solution.

Use Firefox and install the adblock plus addon.

Download Adblock Plus for Firefox. One of the most popular free ad blockers for Firefox. Block annoying ads on sites like Facebook, YouTube and all other websites. Adblock Plus blocks all annoying ads, and supports websites by not blocking unobtrusive ads by default (configurable).

Lou, did you respond and delete your post or somehow post at the same time as JJ Gold at 4:57 but can't see what you wrote.

This seems to be a bit odd.

I've been having this happen to me for over a year now. I get selective advertising banners (based on my browsing history) popping up on all kinds of sites I visit. However, it just started happening to me when I browse SBR about a week ago.

Google's ads run on Google's website not on SBR or any other third party site where Google's ad network is featured. It loads in an Iframe. SBR has no idea what google is showing you in that iframed page nor do we have any way of collecting the data. The address where that ad is hosted is google.com. We just allow them to serve a page the size of the ad. Think of it like cutting out a square in a newspaper and seeing an ad from a page behind it.

You can go into your Google settings and disable customized search but everything you get from Google including their ads is from their own server.

Thks for the explanation Bill. I had a general idea of how it operated. Where it's weird on my end though is, like I said, I've always had SBR sponsored banners until about a week ago when I started receiving target advertisements banners based on my browsing history. I've been getting these types of ads elsewhere for as long as I could remember, but not at SBR. So it was just odd to all of a sudden now start getting them here. I think OP is experiencing the same change as well, hence this thread being created.

If you have accounts at any of these services owned by google, then you're being tracked. Various other websites track you as well. Log into facebook, switch to another tab and do some browsing, you're being tracked.

No way an oil burner can be trumped as lowest cost heating. Anyone looking to buy one should be looking at used. Everyone with access to natural gas is switching over. A 3 yr old oil furnace in great shape can be had for next to nothing
