I Got Scammed Today

Same thing happened to me about half a year to a year ago. Got a call (if I remember correctly, but I am not sure, it was also a scammer claiming to work for BOL) offering a decent bonus. He gave me his number to call back, which (stupid me) I did. However, when I tried to call him back with the control number I couldn't get through. So I called BOL and discovered that the caller did not work for them. I quickly ran back to the Westernn Unionn office to quash the transfer. I told the clerks that I just had an argument with the person that I had sent the money to, which was a loan, and didn't think my friend was going to repay so could I have my money back please. They told me that the person in Costa Rica actually could pick up the money without the control number ( which is exactly the opposite of how I thought it was supposed to work). So they said that they just needed to call ** up and get the funds returned. But they couldn't get thru to ** for almost half an hour. Meanwhile, while standing there watching the clerk wait on the phone to get answered, I broke out in a cold sweat. Finally, ** answered the phone, said the funds had not been picked up and sent the $2500 back to me, minus the hundred dollar plus fee. So I have learned to make sure that I call the book thru its known number with deposit info.

Funny, this was the first thing that came to my mind too.

It's actually a fairly predictable side effect of the referral bonus racket all these guys had going. In the course of getting these referral bonuses from total strangers on a degen forum and splitting it between both parties via PayPal, your name, contact info, and sportsbook account number gets passed around to people you really can't trust.

I could see Patty calling BetOnline to set up a W.U. deposit for his account, then spoofing his Caller ID and calling Zeta with a too good to be true promotion and just passing along the recipient info.

In short, there is no free money out there, guys. Stop hustling for dimes and work for dollars.

guys i went on live chat and spoke to a manager on the phone. neither of them knew about the promotion or recognized the receiver's name. i knew it was a scam at this point. then i called back the los angeles area code number to try to get more information about the situation but the guy never picked up.

Tell your books no phone calls only emails. If someone claiming to represent your book calls, you know it's a scam.

Change every password you have everywhere. No joke. Even everything non gambling related. It's a pain but I had to do it not long ago. Don't be lazy... do it!

You guys go on some dodgy sites and you have no way of telling what info they're catching... just change your passwords to look something like this to be safe: Tasd9847TdTwi66 (ie combo of upper and lower case, numbers and random shit... no common words xo)

It sounds like a pain in the arse but it's a necessity these days... too many scammers have those programs where they just run common words through log ins and once they get a hit, start playing with numbers to finish the password off. I'm sure the more techie guys could explain it in better detail but that's the gist I got from CNET

I save my password in the Notepad on my PC laptop and just in a doc on the Mac. The file is always open so when I need to log in somewhere I just copy and paste. It sounds paranoid but it's not like it's an ex girlfriend or whatever trying to spy on you... the people who are hardcore trying to get your info want to do you serious harm.

today i got a phone call from a north los angeles area code. the person claimed to be "Jim" from the BetOnline marketing department. he asked me if my name was **** and i said yes. then he said betonline was offering a 100% freeplay up to a $1000 deposit with 5x rollover. now the phone call tin actually woke me up so i was still dazed and out of it when i was talking to him. i told him i was definitely interested but for some reason my instincts told me, "this sounds fishy...".

i decided to go ahead and i asked him for a westernn unionn name and city. i wanted to see if he was legit so i asked him what my betonline account number was and he knew it. i get calls from different books all the time advertising special reload bonuses so i was familiar with this procedure. for example bookmaker does this same cold-calling procedure and i love playing there. i asked him to email me the westernn unionn to my email address on file. he was like, oh we cant do that. so i wrote it down myself. he also said he put a note in my account noting that i was eligible for the 100% freeplay.

i did not see the risk here and i went to send the money myself but i used my dad's name as the sender. this w.u. location never asks for ID when sending money, only receiving. i cant use my name b/c i sent a dime to a Costa rican book already this week so my name is hot. i do not want to risk getting blacklisted again. so i use my dad's name in case there is an issue then i can have him go pick up the funds risk free. it went thru.

then i get home an hour later and i asked the betonline account representative on live chat if there was a note in my account about the 100% freeplay. he had no idea about this promotion. i called them on the phone and the manager said no one from betonline gave me that receiver name or that bonus offer. at this point i was like holy sh*t i just got scammed. so i was like okay i have to call westernn unionn.

i called w.u. up and they said the funds have not been picked up thank god. i asked them to freeze the transaction they said they could not do that but they would gladly issue me a refund, minus the fees. but there is no way the receiver (scammer) can pick up the funds without the confirmation \# so i am safe here. nobody knows the confirmation \# except me and the w.u. staff. i just have to explain to my dad that i need him to pick up a w.u. money order under his name for me tomorrow lol.

Disclaimer: i am not bashing betonline here nor am i mad at them. somehow some creep got my correct full name, cell phone number, and betonline account number, which is scary. i'm making this post to tell posters to be careful when dealing with sh*t like this.

Try to check their phone number on http://www.tellows.com . it will help you with your decision about answering or ignoring the phone call. In addition to a risk rating, tellows provides an approximate location of the number calling.

bongo i was nervous about asking my dad to do that. i kinda tricked W.U. instead tho. i called up betonline and asked for another receiver name in panama. then i called up W/U and said my friend in panama could not pick up the funds so i would have my other amigo pick it up instead. they changed the receiver name for me and funds were able to be picked up. this was good b/c i did not lose the fee.
