Does prove how much money distorts markets though - when this happened, it was always very visible.Comment -

LOL PPlayer. I am amazed by the naivete of some of our younger posters. I have an extensive library of sports betting books and especially books about sports fixes. I am fascinated by the subject and always have been.
Just walked over to the shelves and pulled out 3 that all in this business would find fascinating to read, but sadly won't for whatever reason..
How Jack Molinas Almost Destroyed the Game of Basketball: The Wizard of Odds by Charlie Rosen. Also The Game They Played by Stanley Cohen. The latter is the story of the City College team and the notorious 1949-50 college baskets season.
Want more contemporary? A good read is Gaming The Game by Sean Patrick Griffin. These reads are just the tip of the iceberg.
Have a Happy Holiday season Pittsburgh Player.Comment -

#22thats true, but while fixes are rare, they do tend to happen in the lower divisions of some leagues, not going to shy away from a sport as a whole because of shifty business that you very rarely get caught out on.Comment -

Exactly. Half the euro soccer teams have bookies for sponsors and promote them on their jerseys and somehow people are shocked gambling affects outcomes of games and some matches are fixed.
This is exactly why no major North American sports league will allow a franchise in Vegas, much less be sponsored by a gambling entity.Comment -

#29Just never bet on lower tiers in any sport. Whoever said don't bet on anything south of Stuttgart, this is bull, just a few years ago was the the bundesliga scandal with the referee fixing matches in the 2nd bundesliga and the regionalliga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundesl...dal_%282005%29). And it is not just soccer, the lower level of tennis is the same thing. In the US there is isnt an NFL lower divisions, and you cant easily bet on obscure games like DIII college sports, but still every now and then comes out a story about point shaving.
It is quite simple, at lower level of sport the risk/reward tradeoff is easily skewed in favor of fixing, so it will always happen, any sport, any country.Comment
