He's always been a dick. He signed a long term contract at Rice, then left the next day.

Great coach. Wins everywhere he coaches.
Rice has been horrific since his departure.

Not a great coach, just an above average offensive mind who has no class or respect for anyone other than himself. He walks out on Pitt after one year by text message saying ASU is his dream job. That is more or less exactly what he said when Pitt hired him too, so i'd have a backup plan in place if i was ASU. He pulled a similar stunt at Rice where he signed a contract extension with a big raise & a few days later bolted for Tulsa. Supposedly one of those "holy rollers" & claims to read the bible everyday, but seems like a big hypocrite that lied to his players. Pitt is probably lucky to be rid of him.

Helps explain why he text msg'd his players at Pitt. Not exactly forming emotional attachments.
Dick move.
For example: UNC has hired the Southern Miss coach. The outgoing Southern Miss coach is staying for their bowl game, the 'season-long interim' coach at UNC is staying for their bowl game (and looks to be headed to Ohio State at this point).
I'm not saying you gotta hang around, but at least have a team meeting to look the kids in the face and tell them you're leaving on the next thing smoking.

>> Rice has been horrific since his departure.
Not true. In 2008, two years after the Toad left, Rice had its best season in nearly forever, going 10-3, including a 38-14 Texas Bowl victory over Western Michigan. Bailiff has been largely a disappointment and underachiever, to be sure.
While TG brought needed energy and excitement to Rice football, he created many problems that had to be cleaned up after he left. His 6-6 regular season -- with Major Applewhite as OC -- was pretty magical., compared with the lackluster final years of Hatfield and his triple-option offense. Many games were exciting last-second victories. The ball bounced our way all season long. But TG didn't have the team ready for the New Orleans Bowl, where Troy trounced the Owls.
One thing I've never understood, however, is TG's reputation as a defensive guru. He's been in charge of defenses along the way, true. But at Rice, Tulsa and Pitt, they've not been stellar.
Good luck, Sun Devils. The Toad has landed in Tempe.
