Just playing devil's advocate here but if Lyons needed to make up 7 goals, isn't it logical to assume that Ajax was going to pack their defense in tight and do everything in their power to slow the game down? Obviously Lyons was going to do everything in their power to open the game up but who says they had to be the ones to win the battle of pace pregame? The one thing you are correct about is that I'm an American who doesn't know much about soccer however I can usually spot a Monday morning quarterback from a mile away.
Well for starters, Lyon were playing Dinamo Zagreb not Ajax.
Secondly, Zagreb had big injury troubles in central defence and were in terrible form in their domestic league and lost all 5 games in CL. Their manager jurcic was on the brink of being sacked before the game. They had nothing to play for but pride and morale must of been low.
Thirdly, with lyon planning to press and attack, that would open them up to get done on the counter.
Not going to bother trying to explain it more.
I hope you understand now.
