Median is correct. However, the idea that they are right on the money because a few games have landed close to the total is silly. The line is simply the median (or whatever depending on the odds) on the game's probability distribution. It's expected to hit x% of the time and if you picked another random number that would also have an associated probability of landing on that number. So if the spread is efficient on an NBA game and the spread is 2, there is around a 4% chance of the spread landing on that number. Doing so over a one game sample size doesn't indicate that the books, or more correctly the market, got the spread right (it does to a rather limited extent via Bayesian inference) but that the game simply landed on that number.Comment -
ignoring the math and listening to me at 5:26 am. people were talking about how great the linesmakers where when usa beat china vby 31. never mind that the line was +32.5 for a while and fell to -29. it's just a point on the distribution. even if it's the most likely, the likehood was tiny, and the books got ****ing killed.
i know a bookie who thinks that when they do "their job" ie the game falls close to the spread, they have a higher likelyhood of getting ****ed. which is of course insane. but gives me great confidence because this guy cleans up and he doesnt know a god damn thingComment
