Good question, I am not sure if they get paid or not. You are right about some countries awarding bonuses for medals. I imagine most winning athletes make the bolk of their money from endorsements.

Depends on the country and it depends on how good you are.I have a friend that knows someone that was training for the olympics and they basically had to pay for everything themselves.This athlete wasn't a metal contender or anything.
The athletes that don't get endorsements usually have day jobs to make there money. Thats why these athletes usually lose in the olympics because they don't have the time or money to devote to it that an athlete that makes big endorsement dollars does

Depends on country and sport, But alot of these sports that dont have A league Like NBA, MLS, ect have normal day to day jobs. I remember there being a short clip on a shot putter who trained everyday after his 9 to 5.

Sometimes the committees help you find sponsors, in some countries they are very mismanaged and don't help at all. Some committees pay their strong prospects or folks that have pre-qualify, for the period of training leading up to the Olympics, which would be like a regular 9-5 salary. Some committees just help out with equiptment and such. Some committees are very prejudice with their athletes giving great support to some and almost nothing to others, i.e. Brazil.

They get paid huge amounts through endorsements... Most of these guys will spend the year giving motivational talks, making appearances, etc. they do extremely well like that.. If you are the caliber of a Michael Phelps you are making millions per year.. plus they are constantly competing outside of the olympics
