ATHENS: Serious violence broke out during a first division women’s volleyball match in the Athens suburb of Markopoulo on Saturday, The Greek Volleyball Federation announced.
The match between host Markopoulo and Panathinaikos was in the first set with the score 2-1 in favour of the home team when dozens of hooded hooligans entered the gymnasium and threw stones, sticks and other objects at some 450 spectators, the federation said.
“In the stands there were fans from both Markopoulo and Panathinaikos who participated in the ‘battle’ and others ran to the exits to safety,” the federation said.
The federation said that at the time of the violence there were very few policemen on duty at the gymnasium.
