I was gong to make this a reply in crazyl's toms river thread, but got carried away (as usual) and decided to open a new thread.
Anyone who's been to AC recently is free to contradict. Or to add to.
I checked Atlantic City out for one night when I was visiting one of my siblings there about a month ago(Showboat, sister gave me a voucher for free room and breakfast.)
AC is in a ton of sh1t. They finally got around to doing some renovating just off the boardwark, upscale shops etc. At the exact time the recession takes hold.
And worse, NY tracks are getting slot machines. Phiiladelphia has built or is building major casinos - AC draws a lot of biz from Philly and West and South Jersey. Goodbye to a lot of that.
I hear that the Poconos also want slots, and will likely get them.
The NJ tracks, like Monmouth, say they can't survive without slots - AC is violently opposed to that.,
Meanwhile, except for the boardwalk and ocean, the place screwed up from the start. They let NJ reject sports betting, andd now regret it. You pay full price for a Racing Form at the few simulcast centers there, unlike Vegas where you get them free or almost so.
The boardwalk is still tacky - dollar store, gypsy fortune tellers, souvenir shops -- absolutely gross. The dozen or so AC casinos (NJ limits their number, unlike Nevada where anyone with the bucks and who can pass muster on background checks ccan get a licence) were asleep at the wheel.
They should have bought those dumps out years ago,and created Vegas Strip type entertainment: live shows, dancing fountains, light shows, tht kind of thing. Make the place a "destination."
All the boards offer are street performers - some of them pretty good, annd they'll pass the hat when done.
But - it's Jersey. I'm afraid that says it all. Still got the ocean tho - barring a huge Calif earthquake that slices the state off to float away to China, Vegas wil never match that.
