Anyone Else Been to Atlantic City Recently?
I was gong to make this a reply in crazyl's toms river thread, but got carried away (as usual) and decided to open a new thread.

Anyone who's been to AC recently is free to contradict. Or to add to.

I checked Atlantic City out for one night when I was visiting one of my siblings there about a month ago(Showboat, sister gave me a voucher for free room and breakfast.)

AC is in a ton of sh1t. They finally got around to doing some renovating just off the boardwark, upscale shops etc. At the exact time the recession takes hold.

And worse, NY tracks are getting slot machines. Phiiladelphia has built or is building major casinos - AC draws a lot of biz from Philly and West and South Jersey. Goodbye to a lot of that.

I hear that the Poconos also want slots, and will likely get them.

The NJ tracks, like Monmouth, say they can't survive without slots - AC is violently opposed to that.,

Meanwhile, except for the boardwalk and ocean, the place screwed up from the start. They let NJ reject sports betting, andd now regret it. You pay full price for a Racing Form at the few simulcast centers there, unlike Vegas where you get them free or almost so.

The boardwalk is still tacky - dollar store, gypsy fortune tellers, souvenir shops -- absolutely gross. The dozen or so AC casinos (NJ limits their number, unlike Nevada where anyone with the bucks and who can pass muster on background checks ccan get a licence) were asleep at the wheel.

They should have bought those dumps out years ago,and created Vegas Strip type entertainment: live shows, dancing fountains, light shows, tht kind of thing. Make the place a "destination."

All the boards offer are street performers - some of them pretty good, annd they'll pass the hat when done.

But - it's Jersey. I'm afraid that says it all. Still got the ocean tho - barring a huge Calif earthquake that slices the state off to float away to China, Vegas wil never match that.

Couple of interesting things I noticed about AC.

No keno. Not in the five places I stopped at. Not that this is a good game -it's probably the worse odds-wise in any casino, maybe equalled by the Big Wheel.

But for someone (like myself) who doesn't much play casino games,a keno area is like place of refuge - you can sit there and relax from all the blinking lights and zombies punching their lives into the slots.

The reason AC does not have live keno, I think, is that it is too labor-intensive. Same reason the offtrack areas are so lame - need clerks to sell and cash.

Another item of interest about AC - this is for cat lovers, which means mostly women - is that the town allows a bunch of strays not only to live under the boardwalk, but actually feeds them every day.

They, or some cat people, lay out mats for them to sleep on, also.

And while there are no actual cat houses in AC (not visilbe anyway) any cat who wants to play with a mouse can just cruise the boulevard right near the casinos - Atlantic Avenue I think it is.

But watch out- a serial killer has been knocking off street whores there for years, so the lady you solicit may be a cop.

AC need sports betting and a total boardwalk make-over.

      One other thing.

If you go to AC, be sure to stop to have lunch at The Irish Pub. It's right off the boardwalk, on a steet called St james Place (I grabbed a menu).

This is a clone of a place of the same name and ownership of one in Philly.

Great food at reasonble prices, tho the menu is limited. Grab the daily special, posted on the wall.

And if you like a great salad now and then, order their big salad. Only around $2.75, if I recall rightly, and both terrific and huge.

Irish whiskey and Irish and English beer galore. And the walls are totally decorated with old posters - many of them dealing with old sporting events, from days gone by.

Music too on certain nights. All the waitpersons seem to be colleens, sure an' begorra.

I think the Irish Pub is near the Resorts casino, but am not totally sure.

AC is basically the ghetto, lots of poor blacks and other races hanging around because ghetto neighborhoods surround AC

I'm willing to bet my left nut that you didn't look hard enough for keno. There is no way 5 different casinos didn't have keno, let a lone one of them. And I'm not talking electronic video keno.

Also, there are slots in the Poconos called Mount Airy casino. It has been open for about 1 year.

AC is a ghetto, but why knock them for making improvements? Better late vs never.

The upscale shops off of the boardwalk have been open for over 4 years. That is, if you meant the outlets.

I agree with almost everything you say, but in my opinion, this is what makes AC, AC.

AC needs more things to do other than just casinos, that's always beens its problem, and it still is. They need to build it up, get rid of the lower class living that surrounds the casinos, AC is not very nice other than the beach and casinos. I always liked the trump marina part of the island, just because you were sort of away from all the ghettos. But they just need to build up the place like they do with other south jersey shore points, like wildwood, where there is a lot to do.

Bally's has keno! Of course you wont like AC if you dont like casino games. THATS THE WHOLE POINT OF AC!!!!!!!!!!!!

I go all the time. Free rooms, free shows, free food, kids and wife get to go to the ocean. Its a FREE vacation as long as I dont lose my balls playing craps!
