A Sad day, Bennigans closes its doors
Not a big deal to some or many, but it was my 1st real job in HS and i worked there on and off for 4 years while in HS and college, made some great friends and still talk to a bunch to this day.

Worked at the Calumet City, IL Bennigans from July 1990 till august 1994, not all consecutively, but you get the picture.

    A sad day indeed.

Many Chicago-area Bennigan's to close as parent files bankruptcy

Many Bennigan's restaurants in Chicago and across the country abruptly closed Tuesday after the company that owns the chain filed for bankruptcy.

S & A Restaurant Corp and some of its affiliates, which are popularly known as Bennigan's, Steak & Ale and Tavern restaurants, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, said a statement from Plano, Texas-based Metromedia Restaurant Group, which ultimately owns all three restaurant chains.

The statement didn't disclose the number of restaurants that are closing. Sheryl Randolph, a spokeswoman for Metromedia Restaurant Group, said the closure doesn't effect franchisee-owned outlets.

According to Bennigan's Web site, it has 21 locations in Illinois and another three in Northwest Indiana. But it is unclear how many are company-owned and how many are owned by franchisees.

Managers of Bennigan's restaurants across the country were awoken last night by midnight phone calls telling them to shutter their restaurants immediately, according to interviews with several restaurant managers.

Alphonso Prince, the general manager at the Bennigan's in Calumet City, said he received a call from his supervisor about 12:10 a.m. that all the company-owned restaurants were closing nationwide.

"They had been shutting down stores here and there. I never thought all stores," Prince, 33, of Gary, Ind., said in a telephone interview.

Two Bennigans locations along Michigan avenue were locked and empty at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, though both normally open by 8 a.m. for breakfast. Both restaurants posted signs on plain printer paper near their entrances announcing that they were closed.

Lights were on and a couple of employees could be seen milling around the restaurants at 225 N. Michigan Ave. and 150 S. Michigan, but no one answered knocks at their entrance doors-not even for coworkers. A woman who identified herself as a Bennigan's employee knocked in frustration at one location before giving up and walking away.

Caleb Kosek, 24, showed up for his first day of work as a Bennigan's server to find the 225 North Michigan location locked. He circled the building for a few minutes before passersby informed him that they had heard the restaurant chain was closed as of that morning.

"Wow," he said wide-eyed as he peeked into the empty restaurant.

Gerald and Elizabeth O'Boyle, who were visiting the city from Hamilton, Ontario, passed by the 225 North Michigan restaurant Monday evening to find it packed, they said. They figured its popularity was a good sign, and decided to return Tuesday morning for breakfast.

"This is highly unusual," Gerald O'Boyle said as he stood outside the closed restaurant. "I just can't fathom it."

Chapter 7 bankruptcy implies liquidation, not reorganization of a financially troubled company. That means the shuttered stores are not likely to reopen.

I worked as a cook at Bennigans in the early/mid 90's, made lots of good friends and its sad to see a place where i had such a good time close its doors. Not the best food, especially since the got rid of the BEST Chicken Fajitas i ever ate. the fajita baste on there was awesome. Great Wings and buffalo chicken sandwich too.

The restaurant biz is a tough one!

There is so much competition these days for the entertainment-dining dollar and maybe Bennigan's was up against similar concept restaurants like TGIF Friday's.Applebee's,Ruby Tuesday's and Chilli's.All are good including Bennigan's if I remember right.I probably ate at the one Slick brought up that's in Minneapolis once.

You have so many things working against you these days as a restaurant owner.Taxes, hold ups, regualtion after regualtion after regulation. One bad pepper that you serve and get a few people sick and you get sued and it ruins your restaurant's repuation. You have the friggin diet police hounding you all the time if you make tasty food in transe fat whatever oil and if your portions are too big.I wish these A-holes would worry if their orrifices are too big from being stretched by 100 different people and using Crisco and Wesson for those purposes.hehe!Hell, where I live the local government is financing restaurant owners that are competing with similar restaurants that got private financing.Talk about a bad policy.

With tougher times you do get more people interested in eating out at places like Old Country Buffet and Cicci's Pizza. The atmosphere might not be the best with obese seniors, feebs, tards and the leapor colony showing up but it's good food at a cheap price.Sorry I had to denegrate the clientel but it's the same people that use Greyhound Bus.Sorry for not being PC and just saying words like challenged and such.

Remember Norm from Cheer's favorite restaurant? The Hungry Hoeffer.A place called the Feed Trough might make it these days.Direct and to the point.

Bennigans is pretty expensive for the menu they have. They don't have anything that really stands out... other than they keep a lot of beer on tap.

Any Bennigan's that was franchised to a private owner is not affected by this Bankruptcy, but most were corporate owned.

That was the one that gave me the squirts HB. I had it once in Peoria after partying hard at Big Al's.

Bennigans served a significant purpose in the grand scheme of things, one of the 1st sit down type restaurants when it first opened in the mid 70's. I guess it outlived its use though. But i will miss it, some great stuff there if you know what is good and what wasn't.

we've dined N dashed at this joint at least 200 times when we were down on our luck and ran up massive bar tabs and they never asked to open a cc as we were cash only. the manager tried chasing us down the 167th time but bit the dust over a fake alarm sign
