why did the show pay more then the place for the 5 horse

Because it's pari mutual and therefore each divided is governed by the amounts placed in the respective pools. Obviously there was less money for 5 in the show pool than the place pool. That would be my take.

i placed 3 dollars on it and recived 9.90 back, is that right? that seems low...it shows the "show" wagers pay back 9.80 per every 2 dollars, im lost on this one...it makes no sense at all

The dividend is usually to a $2 stake.

not uncommon for the pools to get strange for place/show having the show pay more.

however $3 to place on the 5 should have returned 12.90...you are probably looking at "net won: 9.90" and your $3.00 you bet was also returned

The payoff is correct. The place pool had $4583 total of which $474 was on the 3 and $442 on the 5. The show pool has a dramatic difference. The total was $2900 of which $287 was on the 3 and only $147 on the 5, { almost a 2/1 ratio }. When the outside horse who had the most money in both pools finished off the board the prices became inflated.
Payoffs like this are not uncommon especially in the later races when the players are more focused on the tri's and super's.
