How drunk is Roger Federer right now?
Hear that? The sound of a glass tapping along the counter, sorrows being washed away by that poison in liquor form. Or maybe it's just the resounding thud of Roger Federer's heart.

Few words can explain what happened tonight.

This would be like watching Tom Brady 8 years from now, struggling to maintain more TD's than interceptions. He's at that age now, as a tennis player, where some of these new kids on the block are faster than he is, they never give up etc.

It all seems to have started, his decline from utter dominance that is, when Rafael Nadal became the only guy who would deny him his majors trophies. Yeah, Djokovic did too, but Rafa is the guy in his head, the guy who just beat him in Wimbledon- to quote Fed, "his part of the year".

Now, the guy who maintained the #1 ranking so long the authorities were almost called onto the scene to investigate kidnapping, is belted off the court by world #22. I don't know that we've ever seen a fall from grace quite like this, but as a sports enthusiast and bettor as well, it's painful to watch.

crazyl, please slow down dude, it's only the rogers masters. early in 2007, roger lost to guillermo canas, not once, but twice! he bounced back from that to make it to the french final again, won wimbledon for the 5th straight time, and won the us open for the 4th straight time. this yr, he made the french final, lost a heartbreaker in the wimbledon final, and now has a little extra time to rest and think about things.

i expect roger to bounce back STRONG at the us open, i really do. then again, if he gets run off the court by anyone, including djokovic in the final at the us open, then i think it's time to really start worrying

i watched tonight's match from beginning til end and his head was not into it, he's still thinking about that wimbledon heartbreak loss, and perhaps he just needs time to rest, he lost to players worse than simon just last yr and bounced back, please slow down dude, you're burying and throwing dirt on fed's body while he's still warm!

Well Fed will still retain his number one ranking even if Nadal wins this week.
Can't really say that Fed is falling from the earth tennis wise. Granted he lost to stepanek and Fish this year and simon today but every player has bad matches. Seems though that he can't beat DJO or Nadal but he is still up there in the top 3 players in the world. If he starts losing to shit players on a regular basis, then we can agree that he is done.
I still think that he will eventually snap out of this once he gets a coach and regains his confidence by beating DJO or Nadal but until that happens, everyone will wonder if he is getting near the end

Do others feel the same way? I really think he's on a big decline and it's slowly starting to unravel before our very eyes, maybe not so much his talent per sey, but his mental toughness is eroding and that's going to produce more of these losses. I.E., A player as talented as Djokovics' inexcusable losses every time you bat an eye.

great post, staco. i agree, he needs a coach but seems too stubborn still to believe it. tony roche coached him back in '04 and '05, and he made his first french final under roachie. perhaps roachie can come back for 2nd stint? maybe brad gilbert can coach fed, gilbert revived agassi's career so perhaps he can do the same for fed

fed has won for so long on his own, that i really believe he needs to wake up right now and hire a guy to work with him over the next 4.5 wks and prepare for the open, maybe this loss is a blessing in disguise

sampras won 3 slams after his 27th bday, agassi won 5 more after his 27th bday, including 3 runner-ups, roger will turn 27 in a little over 2 weeks, i'm not ready to give up on him just yet,

come on roger, get it done man!

Hoopster, either way, what happened today was embarrassing to watch and I'm sure it isn't sitting well with Federer right now.

of course not, crazyl, just like last year's back to back losses to canas did not sit well either. at least tonight it was the 22nd ranked player in the world and not a nobody like canas!

I can respect that, I'm still a bit wet behind the ears. It's a learning process but one I enjoy, even despite the recent rough patch.

Well the theme was it's a huge disappointment, and I think it's hard to make a case to state otherwise. The next major I see him winning is Wimbledon, and that's a while from now bud. I would personally advise betting the NO to the max on his US open future.

Crazy bastard, you know your tennis. I just watch for fun, well the womens tennis. You know for the grunting and bitches running around in those cute little outfits, however, the fed man got old in like a month's time, he was so dominant what happen to this dude. It will probably get people like me to watch more now.

hell with the betting brother, i'm rooting for roger just because i think he's been an incredible ambassador for tennis both on court and off, nadal has been my favorite player for 6 yrs now because i knew about him when he was an amateur way back when, but i think roger is the shit and i just wanto see him get some respect, thats all

it was #22 player in the world he lost to, not the #122, this simon is a rising talent, just keep an eye on him

well CrazyL, we're both letting emotions drive our predictions, i am a big fed fan so i am wishing for a strong us open, you are upset that he lost to karlovic because your capping reputation was hurt (not in my book, though), so you expect and probably hope fed loses every match he plays from now on,

                                            something must give!!!

the truth is somewhere in the middle
