    Norman Saving British Open
This guys come out of the fukkin woodwork to take the lead after 2 rounds. Without Woods the tourney was dead but a huge golf name is right there which will keep some people interested.

Great story indeed. Would love to see the Shark hold on and capture his third British Open. Gives hope to all of us old farts, plus he gets to make out with Chris Evert, what a guy!

I love what Jack Nicklaus said about the younger players:

"If they don't win, they still walk home with a big check," Nicklaus said. "They don't have to do some of the things the Watsons had to do, the Normans, the Lehmans, and that's to gut it out. It doesn't mean the young guys will be out of it. It just makes it appear as though the guys who have had that experience are coming to the top."

"When we played golf, it wasn't to make a living," Nicklaus said. "It was to make a name for yourself so you could make a living."

While technically true, it ignores that fact that there is WAY more depth to the competition out on tour now. Sure 125th on the money list made $800,000 last year, but 126th lost their card. The competition to just stay on tour now is intense (or to get there in the first place).

If he doesn't think these young guys are extremely driven to win, he should spend more time around some of them -- because the ones I know certainly are. Go out to a nationwide tournament and see how competitive that is week to week. While winning there certainly pays well, anything outside the top 10 and you aren't covering your expenses for the week. A lot of those guys are in debt just to be out there competing.

I think Jack might be overstating it a bit, though I do agree with his basic premise. But it does come off a little like the old exagerration, "When I was your age, we had to walk uphill three miles to and from school in blowing snow." It's easy for us old guys to just blurt out that we had it rougher growing up, something I really don't believe.

David Duval is a bigger story than Greg Norman. He is just lurking to win the British Open out of nowhere.

Seems to me Duval plays better when he's overweight.

I find it interesting that David Duval's golf career went into the tank about the time Jason Lane's baseball career was taking off, and now that Lane's career is in the tank, Duval is making a comeback. Coincidence? You be the judge.

It is much tougher to win an event now than when jack played, everyone is good and practing day and night. Jack is jealous that is all.

Roco Mediate top 5 finish at over 4/1 right now, looks pretty good.

I can't imagine Nicklaus is jealous, just don't think he chose his words right for the PC world and he comes off like a crotchety old man. What I read in his statement is when he broke in, very few of the players could really make a living just playing the tour. Like any other sport back then, guys had jobs in their offseason to make ends meet. Only a few of the true stars of any given sport could get by solely on their checks from MLB, NFL, PGA, etc. Nowadays, that's not the case.

They didn't have an all-exempt tour back then. Alot of guy had to come in on monday to try to qualify, and not all who made the cut got a check. Of course, when they did get paid it doesn't compare to now. I think this is about the 400,000th time Jack Nicklaus has mentioned this time to let it go...

He is referring more about their desire to win , guys now make millions without ever winning a tournament.
