Don't bet on gambling to end boredom, wives told

Bored housewives are vulnerable to becoming addicted to gambling due to the "empty nest syndrome," a counselling center study has found.
Of 494 women who sought help at the Caritas Addicted Gamblers Counselling Centre from October 15, 2003, to August 31 this year, 154 - or 31.2 percent - are housewives who developed a serious addiction.

Among the 154, nearly two-thirds (64.1 percent) are pathological gamblers, while another 14.1 percent severely pathological gamblers.

"More than half of these housewives are over 50 years old, and actually going through a transition called `empty nest syndrome,"' said Caritas registered social worker Doris Wong You-man.

Often, after their children become adults, mothers no longer feel needed. Loneliness and boredom set in, pushing many over the edge, the study found.

A Mrs Lok started gambling because her husband had been addicted to betting on horse races for years. As the household income dropped drastically, she realized it was pointless to convince him to stop. So she took up mahjong to earn some cash for living expenses.

To make matters worse, her son and daughter - aged 20 to 30 - lost respect for her and trust in the family, as she constantly visited Macau.

It reached a point where her daughter started hiding her identity cards, before she realized her addiction.

"More than 90 percent of these housewives find it extremely difficult to seek fulfillment at home," Wong said. "Gambling provides a measure of excitement."

By frequenting casinos, playing mahjong, or other forms of betting, the women are running away from family quarrels and unsatisfactory relationships with husbands, Wong said.

"Gambling has no way out, but is a vicious cycle," Wong warned, urging women to stop gambling, as it can lead to more serious problems such as plunging into the debt trap.

More than 61 percent of the addicted wives owe debts of between HK$50,000 and HK$600,000, while 80 percent develop bipolar disorder.

With its extreme mood swings from depression to mania, this condition may lead to suicidal tendencies.

"We strongly encourage all housewives to expand their social network, through [other] leisure activities," said Tang Yiu-cho, Caritas Family Services social work supervisor.

they are already crazy without gambling. girls get bipolar when they get comfortable and bored so you need to make them feel nervous and paranoid all the time....at least they'll act normal like all other girls

Most people are bipolar. Human nature. Turn on the tv, turn off the sound, and watch a live show on the stock market. If the reporters are smiling the market is up, if they're gloomy the market is down. That simple.

Gambling is actually a great opportunity to overcome this childish tendency. It can teach you to remain evenminded no matter what.
