Three days after a conference call with Green Bay Packers team officials on Tuesday in which quarterback Brett Favre emphatically expressed his desire to play in 2008, Favre on Friday formally asked for his contractual release from the Packers in a letter, sources close to Favre and the team said.

The letter was sent by Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, via overnight mail on Thursday and arrived at the Packers facility Friday morning.

Cook, on behalf of Favre, expressed a desire to have an amicable parting, as the Packers have been reluctant to embrace his return. Favre announced his retirement in early March.

During a conference call on Tuesday that included Packers general manager Ted Thompson, Packers coach Mike McCarthy, Favre and Cook, sources say that the quarterback stated emphatically that he wanted to play again.

When Favre was reminded by the Packers' brass that it was in March when the quarterback said publicly and privately that he wasn't 100 percent committed to football, sources said. Favre acknowledged his state of mind at the time, but added that he never felt he was a 100 percent committed in March of previous years, either. Favre felt he had to make a decision to retire because the Packers were pressing him for an answer, a source said.
      Where's he headed?

All I gotta say is Joe Montana. That is where Brett Favre is headed if he signs with another team. He'll hang on for a year or two and look like shit in a new system and then retire with a slighter lesser reputation. Carolina is still the odds on choice I would think. ****er oughta go to the Vikings if he wants to win in the NFC and create an entire new nation of Favre haters.

Favre is washed up, everything went right last year. He would embarrass himself this year with an nfl team. He did not retire, coach and management told him they were going with Rogers so then he retired. He was benched.

Actually, Eaglefan, that is exactly where I think he'll go. He'll end up in Minnesota with his old quarterback coach, Darrell Bevel, who is now there offensive coordinator.

Bruce is average now in his old age..used to be very good.

Lelie wouldn't make the roster on 95% of NFL teams.

There's no way the Packers will release him. Looks like Favre back under center for the Packers in 2008.

It's a shame for the organization that they burnt up 2 picks in the draft on QBs. I suppose the 2nd QB taken will go to the practice squad, maybe picked up by another team.

I keep kicking myself. I just felt like something fishy was going on with Favre. But I believed him when he said he retired. Who else has had such a tearful retirement press conference, then decided to unretire a couple months later? Man...

                                Latest news.
The Green Bay Packers' general manager and coach say they don't plan to grant Brett Favre's request for his release. GM Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy told the Associated Press on Saturday that the star quarterback was welcome to rejoin the team but would have to be a backup.
It was their first public comments since Favre demanded his release this week. Favre held a tearful news conference to announce his retirement March 6.
Thompson and McCarthy did not want to discuss a possible trade. Thompson said he had not received any inquiries as of Saturday morning.

I wonder how the GB faithful will take this news. Probably not well.

Reminds me of Barry Sanders. The Lions wouldn't release him to play else where.

Favre needs to stay retired anyway.

I'm right here in Packer country. I love the way Thompson is playing this chess match with Favre. Threaten to bust his consecutive game streak. Humble him a little bit. Favre has certainly humbled the Packers franchise with these antics. Otherwise I welcome him back. I'm not worried about Rodgers' ego. I don't think Green Bay is the type of city that will eat it's future QB, unlike cities like Chicago or New York who will boo and hiss after every pass that isn't MVP quality. I'm not sure if Wisconsinites have high football IQ, are more compassionate, or maybe just not smart enough to boo their own QB. lol. Anyway, as much drama as there is going on, I'm not worried about it. Now if this was going on in NYC, this would be a mess.

My dad is also a Packers fan, if not a bigger fan. He doesn't think there's any way in hell the Packers will leave $13 million sitting on the bench.

                                    We disagree, but we'll see.
