    Richie Sexson released by Seattle
And the Bavasi Era house cleaning gets underway. For some reason I thought he had signed a five-year deal before the '05 season, so was expecting this to be a more expensive pill for the Mariners to swallow than it is. But they 'only' have to pay out about half of the $15.5 million he was set to receive this season. Dude's made about $70 million since 1997

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3481747
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Mariners have released first baseman Richie Sexson and put pitcher Erik Bedard on the disabled list.

The team announced the moves before Thursday's game at Oakland. Sexson was hitting .218 in 74 games with Seattle this season. He was signed in December 2004 to a four-year contract.

Funny you mention that, Brock. Deer was the first oldie but moldy that came to mind when I read it as well.

As for being with the Yankees or Red Sox, that very well may be true. But he really hasn't hit very well in either park the past few years. Oddly enough, he's been an absolute terror at Petco (.368, 4 HR, 38 AB) in San Diego and the Rogers Centre (.354, 4 HR, 48 AB) in Toronto...

D-Backs, Dodgers or A's is my guess - desperate times, desperate measures.

He's had to face pretty good pitchers in Beckett, Dice-k, Schilling, Paplebon, etc so that would explain his bad numbers at Fenway. Same thing with Yankee Stadium Mussina, Wang, Joba, etc) He'll be better once he signs with either and doesn't have to face their pitching.

I don't see the Dodgers signing him since they like Loney at 1B.

I see Sexton having a great end to the season with any team. I just have a feeling.

They just need bats period. I wouldn't expect him to platoon even, but it's another bat.

Sexson is horrible. I remember last year betting on Seattle and when he came up I had the same feeling I do when the pitcher comes to bat with men in scoring position. I just knew nothing would come of it. And nothing ever did.

No team in their right mind will pick him up.

Can you imagine? 70 million dollars? What a waste of money. In 20 years, what will his impact on society have been? Yet he is wealthy beyond imagination.

He's actually hit both Schilling and Beckett pretty well and has all of one at bat against Joba. Mussina, however, has eaten his lunch.

Actually looking at his stats he hit in the .270's and .260's in most full years of his career. Hit 30+ and 40+ homers too. He just had a short lived career relatively speaking. Only about 7 productive years.

One thing we know for sure, he is not on steroids. Or maybe that is the problem. Maybe he got off and went down the tubes. Always something you have to think about nowadays.

Lets not forget about Greg Vaughn. He qualifies to be on this list as well. I mean that guy was all or nothing as well.

Sexton has had some streaky years but the guy is a beast. This is a guy who can hit 30+ HR's a year and drive in a 100. Look at his career stats.

As fans and bettors we don't fully understand how hard it is to hit a baseball.....we just don't. Not worth all the money he got.......but the guy can hit for power when he's on.

He crushes lefties ryan. Might be a nice platoon player for a decent price.

                                          .344 5 HRs vs. lefties.

This guy will help them and comes at a cheap price. Yanks are paying only a prorated portion of $390,000 minimum salary.
