I once did a community profile for a Freshman English Comp paper on a local ticket scalper friend of mine... Although the grad student / instructor commented she didn't agree with my assessment that my friend provided a valuable service to the community I'm still pretty sure I made a decent grade on it...

If it is a serious class you probably better off just making something up (volunteering at a soup kitchen or orphanage or something) but if this is some kind of intro level class I wouldn't bother putting much thought into it as they SHOULD be mainly interested in just checking to see if you have a basic ability to write for your later classes rather then your choice of subject matters...

Of course you're in the clear it's college, not Sunday school. Unless you live in OKC The buckle of the bible belt. Otherwise you're fine. In fact most college professors I had would have been thrilled to read a paper on sports gambling. Just make it informative and spice it up a bit, they won't know if it's a white lie or not. Like that thrilling 25,000 dollar bet you placed on last years super bowl that ended up pushing. prob just for an intro course.... freshman year I had to take some dumb class for a semester called the Freshman Experience or so dumb shit like that, was required for all incoming freshman ... and keep in mind I was a 21 year old freshman because I played juniors, dumbest class ever and we had to write BS papers that 4th graders could write

Nope, got a few degrees over here in Australia and I was never asked to write anything this perfunctory and banal.

If you need to get interested in writing, you probably shouldn't be at University.

University is a place where people should learn to write and think critically and not merely regurgitate something about their favourite hobby - that can be done when you are learning to read and write for the first time.

Edit: that being said, I don't actually know the question for the paper and it may be more in depth than I have assumed.

I don't think people realize how dumb people are. I'm in a writing class similar to op's and we see other people's papers. Almost every single paper I'm thinking omglolwtf. It is really amazing. Third grade level, at best.
