Supposedly the game got really physical b/c the Chinese refs were trying to help their team win the game. The free throw disparity was like 50-something for China and 14 for us and yet the game was still tied. A witness said it got to the point where an intentional foul was being called on the Hoyas literally every time down the court which gave China four shots each trip. A Chinese player even got in John Thompsons face and "almost took a swing" according to the witness. All of this happened before the brawl.

The players on the Chinese team are all part of the Chinese Army (People's Liberation Army of China, i think it's called). That's why the Chinese police who were at the game were afraid to get involved and try to break anything up.
