Should be more touchbacks with this new rule. Any thoughts?

Yep. The average total should be a point or two less than last year. There's still no edge though, as the books have already taken it into account.

It will not affect the totals. You think it does because the offenses will start deeper in their own territory, but that is only one side of the story. The other is that if defenses can stop offenses early in their drives they will have great field position to score.

you could be right and likely are. But I wonder if the line's makers will agree? I guess we will see week one.

I think there will be more touch backs without a doubt. That will hurt teams like the Bears which depend on special teams.

                    It will lower totals drastically

No more fumbles to give the other team good field position
No more returns for TD's or returns for 40+ yards

This will not even make up for 1/10th of the scoring special teams accounted for.........

I'm sure books will already have it accounted for, but you might factor this in if you're looking at props for team defense or anything. This is going to help teams with really good kickers, but the fact that teams can no longer get more than a five yard running start means this is going to be almost irrelevant. Starting field position might move back 2-3 yards on average but that's not that big a deal.

The kickoff rule will affect sides as well. Many teams (eg CHI) benefited from favorable field position and SUCKED from points from long drives. Drive points will be especially important this season....

On the surface I'd say it will lower the overall total average. Yet there are some good points in this thread that could off sets that. Time will tell. Value may be on the overs in certain situations.

If it does, Vegas will be in front of it before any of us. I remember when they started rolling the clock after an out of bounds play and there was no edge to be had in very short order.

I don't see the new rule affecting the totals, or game period. I think most teams will make the needed adjustments during to preseason to where the kicker can constantly kick the ball between the 5 and goalline.

Well how has this rule affected the totals in this preseason thus far. I'd say just about over half the games were over the total in week one. And the average totals this preseason compared to last season were similar.
