I'm looking at the South Sydney vs. Canberra game tonight...and they keep saying: "the injury-depleted Raiders need to win in their quest to avoid an ''embarrassing'' wooden spoon"

What are they referring to about the wooden spoon?

Wooden Spoon is slang for last place in the comp.

You get the trophy for first place and a wooden spoon for last. (yeah, doesn't make a lot of sense)
