Why only have it every 4 years, even though I don't care to watch it myself, it's clearly the biggest sport worldwide. Why not have it every year or at least every 2 years and rake in tha $$$$, seems strange to me, but guess it's like the Olympics, keep the anticipation up when you only see it every 4 years

Anyway, the European championships is every 4 years, and the world cup is every 4 years, so there's a major tournament every 2 years. The biggest reason is that qualifying for the World Cup is a long and arduous process. The players play for clubs too, so it takes a while to qualify. Then, each confederation (UEFA, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, the African one) have their own seperate tourneys as well (like the Euro for UEFA, Gold Cup for Concacaf, etc...) So teams have to qualify for those as well. So it takes 2 years to get through the qualifying process for those tourneys, as well as the World Cup, so it takes a while. If they had a system like they do in the IIHF for the World Hockey Championships, for example, where they divide all the countries into different classes, then they could have it every year. But FIFA wants to give every contry, no matter how big or small they are, the chance to get to the big dance.Comment -

This is one of the biggest reasons ... the income that a WC creates to a country is simply unimaginable. It takes many years (Just an example the next WC will be held in South Africa in 2010 - these guys started to create the WHOLE structure around 2004-05 and yet they are not ready). To organize such an event you must have the best infrastructure you can imagine, small countries as the ones in Central America would be almost impossible for them to held such event.
