and when i go for a combo, say just a 1, 2..is it you just block with the opposite hand youre using at the time, or just dont block at all?

After the 1, 2 simpy return ur hand to original position (back hand covering side of ur ear, dont let it drop and elbow in tight as well to side of ur body) unless of course u see an opening in ur opponents defence in which case combos would be very effective...
A strong defence will almost always conquer a strong offence...Of course no one can guarantee against the 'lucky' punch, but with a strong defensive base the chances of that happening are very minimal...
