I'm guessing Harbaugh didn't like any of the qbs that were available through FA or trades and figured he'd see if Smith can learn his offense. Like another poster said, at some point he will likely turn to Kapernick and see what he has before looking elsewhere. Harbaugh has some leeway to not win in season one so he will likely work on getting team tougher and more disciplined before finding a qb he really wants.

a smith led this drive last year at the end of a monday night football game that tied it and made the over with a 2-point conversion after his td. i vowed then to stop completely dogging him then but.....he does have a lot of work to do.
