    U.S. debt deal reached...

Congressional leaders have reached an agreement on raising the US debt limit, President Barack Obama has announced.

The deal will cut about $US1 trillion ($A911.91 billion) in spending over 10 years, the president says.
"I want to announce that the leaders of both parties in both chambers have reached an agreement that will reduce the deficit and avoid default, a default that would have had a devastating effect on our economy," Obama said at the White House on Sunday night (Monday morning AEST).
Obama said the deal, which still needs to be approved by Congress, would establish a bipartisan committee of congress to report back by November with a proposal to further reduce the US deficit.
Congress must reach a deal on raising the $US14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Tuesday to avoid a government default.
Default "would have had a devastating effect on our economy," Obama said in the televised address.
No votes were expected in either house of Congress until Monday at the earliest, to give rank-and-file members time to review the package.
"We're not done yet: I want to urge members of both parties to do the right thing and support this deal with your votes over the next few days," Obama said, with time running short before the midnight Tuesday (1400 AEST Wednesday) deadline.
The US government hit its debt limit on May 16 and has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally - but can only do so through August 2.
Business and finance leaders have warned default would send crippling aftershocks through the fragile US economy, still wrestling with stubbornly high unemployment of 9.2 per cent in the wake of the 2008 global meltdown.

Seriously, was there much doubt? It was sort of like the NFL lockout. There's simply too much money at stake to blow it up.

Exactly what jgray said. No way they would have defaulted it would be way too much chaos if that happened

I don't think they will get the Republican votes --- I think they want default. I am a Republican, and I think they want a default on Obama's record. There are some extremists in the House.

For sure but do u really think those that would possibly rebel would want to be known as the members of congress who allowed the US to default...

Wait so in essence what happened? They just voted to raise the debt limit and that's it? Oh and cut $1 trillion in spending TOTAL over the next 10 years? What??

no cut really happened LOL what a joke the cut that repub boehner claim was from a proposed spending for the year, in short the debt would get higher next year than this year and more spending would take place. Be ready for inflation people, your soda pop would cost 5 bucks a pop in near time.

Don't worry, this deal assures that you'll get just that.

It's like someone who gets in a car accident, loses an arm, and the nurse puts a huge towel around it and says, "Good luck!"

everything that has happened in the last few weeks will be brought up in a year during elections. no one was trying to give the other side ammo.

I'm so sick and tired of amateurish rants full of nothing but folk wisdom and superstition. No, we are not like Greece, no we are not owned by China, no inflation is not a problem, no we don't need a gold standard. No, a debt limit increase isn't a license to spend more money, its authorization to raise funds to pay for things we've already bought. If you don't know what you are talking about then don't speak, period. You only run the risk of making yourself sound foolish or spreading your ignorance to others. It is the fact that people believe this trash that is holding our economy back.

9 years ago George W. Bush told Americans that spending money, traveling on vacation, and going about their daily lives was the only way to keep the economy moving in the aftermath of the recession and September 11. Now all of a sudden not spending money is supposed to be the solution to all our problems?

Price of gas goes up 15 cents a gallon and all of a sudden its hyperinflation? Bitch please, like any of you even know what hyperinflation is. You taking wheelbarrows to the store to buy bread yet? Then shut your freaking mouth stop polluting people's minds with folk wisdom and superstition. As more people worldwide escape poverty they're going to want to buy things, and that's going to drive the price of stuff up, that's not inflation, its actual economic growth. If you can't tell the difference between the two, then keep it to yourself.

That might work if the US actually MADE stuff now. So the rest of the world buys stuff they go where WE go...to the cheapest place they can find. The US is is trouble because they cant make anything cheap enough to sell, and refuse to put tariffs on imports to make US products competitive.

And gas is up 15 cents? I remember during the election gas was down to a buck 50 out here in California so that means it was probably a dollar 25 in texas. Now it is hovering around 375 for the cheap stuff and was up to 450 a couple months ago. While that isnt really infaltion it shows that prices for most stuff are pretty much fixed accross the board, and not too many people seem to care.

As far as inflation goes, it takes time for inflation to catch up with the general products. I would expect them to raise interest rates over 1% before next year, and groceries and other everyday products will go up probably 10-12% in the same time frame. Some things have already started inching up. Also the horrible housing market, which is already in disarray, expect house prices to go up as well despite most of them already being too expensive. But that is what 'economic stimulus' starts. So while some people will call it inflation others will say it is cause and effect, or supply and demand.

Either way the country is in the shitter and no matter what type of spin either side puts on it it isnt getting any better. All they will do is trick people into thinking it is better for a little while until they can figure out how to scam them out of everything one last time. But until we start taxing other countries on their imports we will never be able to compete in the business of actually manufacturing something that is competitively priced. So if we cant build stuff cheaper we need to tax the other countries on their stuff to make our stuff competitively priced. Sucks for the consumers somewhat, but that is really what stimulating the economy needs. Buying American is the last chance we have. Giving people more money to spend on foreign junk isnt really helping anyone.

What's funny and sad is that people really think there's a difference between the Dems and the Repubs. They're both equally crooked and all politicians are in it for themselves.

To them it comes down to greed and individualism even at the expense of the country and nature as a whole. History proves this.
