Because most people male or female have a basic understanding of markets and investing. If you keep telling her you invest in stocks she may be inquisitive and want to know details. Better yet she might want to see track records of your "investments" in which case your screwed. Me personally I wouldn't get involved with someone that didn't share common intrests and understandings. If you can excel at something and make money off of it it should make you proud. I am an only child and my parents always had a hard time telling their friends what I do. That was the hardest part. Kept working on a career for a while using my education. But it's really hard to stay focused everyday while your boss is an idiot and you made more than his yearly salary last weekend on sports.
I don't hide it anymore. I tried all the stories, but if you end up with the girl as a long-term relationship or possibly marraige, then you lied to her and now you are a liar. Worse than a gambler. It's not easy finding someone that understands that it's an investment business.Comment -

You're all going at this wrong. Most people have never met a true professional gambler. There's an ocean of difference between a professional gambler and someone who gambles. Gambling on its own is a bad thing or an entertainment purchase. Professional gambling is a whole different animal. Trying to hide it is pointless, because you'll end up spending more and more energy hiding it - your life will be so much easier and better if she knows the truth. That's where the key part comes in, this is not just about whether or not you are a 'liar' or what weird spin you can put on it.
The key thing to remember is, most people - not just girls - have no idea how to react to this sort of thing, so they take their cue from YOU. If you act all evasive and sheepish or make eyes like you're a crazy desperato, she's recoil in horror. Wouldn't you? Act like there's something wrong, and there is. Act like there's nothing wrong, and this is a perfectly good way to make a living just like any other, a skill based profession with the opportunity to go far for those who work hard, and she'll take her cue from that. If you can't back that up, or if you can't say that with a straight face, then it's time to look at yourself in the mirror and either convince yourself it is true or find another line of work.
Every person I have told about what I do for a living, with almost no exceptions, has had the same reaction: That it is awesome. My job before this one was also one that most people are defensive about, and at first I was too. As a result, I came out looking like an ubernerd loser. The moment I realized that it was me doing that, and not the job itself, people started thinking it was neat.
