Jermaine O'Neal Traded to Toronto for TJ Ford and 17th Pick
NEW YORK – After on-and-off again negotiations, the Indiana Pacers have agreed in principle to send six-time All-Star Jermaine O’Neal to the Toronto Raptors for point guard T.J. Ford and the 17th pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, a league executive said Wednesday.

After nearly completing the deal earlier in the week, Pacers and Raptors officials needed to exchange more medical information on O’Neal’s left knee and Ford’s neck before finding a comfort level with the trade. It is believed both sides now are comfortable making the deal, though the trade won’t be complete until both O’Neal and Ford pass their physicals.

Toronto also will send Rasho Nesterovic and another role player to match up with O’Neal’s salary. O’Neal is owed $44 million over the next two seasons. He played just 42 games for Indiana a year ago with a left knee injury. O’Neal has expressed a desire to leave the Pacers for a contender.

Ford, who has a history of neck injuries, became expendable when Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo decided that he wanted to make Jose Calderon the franchise’s future at point guard.

Ford was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a condition that narrows the openings the spinal cord runs through. He missed the 2004-05 season with the Bucks following neck surgery, and missed 13 games with a neck injury last season after Atlanta’s Al Horford leveled him on a breakaway layup. Ford has $25 million and two years left on his contract. Indiana had been searching for a point guard and Ford takes the job now.

Calderon is a restricted free agent, and Colangelo has insisted that he’ll match any offer for him. Clearly, the Raptors will belong to him now.

The Pacers would now hold the 11th and 17th picks in the draft.

Bad trade for Toronto. Why take Jermaine now? Whats worse is the story that is floating about Detroit willing to trade Wallace aand Billups for Baron Davis. WHAT!!!! LOL! How bad is that? If this happens...Deuce should never say how great Detroit is again.

What I don't understand is, why the **** did we have to give them the 17th pick as well.

No that wasn't the rumor at all. Don't jump to conclusions son, it was Davis, Harrington, 13th overall pick, for Billups, Wallace.

That Detroit trade if i happen will put Golden St. in a nice spot. You'll never see the soft Lakers in the finals for a while.

Would that still be fair? Would you take it? Dumars has given up and resigned himself to the fact that Boston will be the beast for another 2 years and Cleveland, Orlando, and Toronto is going to pass them.

Billups and Wallace since 04 play for a paycheck not for a championship. Both are far past their primes.

Then lets see if Dumars trades them. I hope you have heard that Prince is on the trade market as well. Your Pistons are trying to rebuild around Stuckey. And the new coach. Gonna be awhile before they compete for a championship again.

This is a brutal trade for Toronto. Jermaine O'Neal appears to be totally washed up. Ford has had his problems but at least he is an effective player when healthy, which is actually most of the time. I just hope B.C. knows something that everyone else doesn't...

No offense Sinister Cat, but if I'm a GM and on one line is bryan colangelo, and on the other line is you, I'm taking your call.

                                The guy is sharp.

Not 100% sure here but from what I heard isn't Nesterovic also in this deal?Which makes it that much worse. Nesterovic pretty much blows but he is still a big body that a team needs. Ford and Nesterovic for Oneal is a so so trade but when you throw in a first round pick, anything can happen with that. I agree with what has been said in this thread though, Oneals to injury prone and makes over 20 million dollars I believe.Definately could have gotten something better then this surely.

lol.. of course, none taken. I know that he knows more, and has better judgment, than I do. And given his history, as a Raptors fan, I defer to his judgment even when I have my doubts. So I hope he is smart again and everything works out. But to me it would seem to take a miracle for J O'Neal to return to his old self.

It's obvious that T.J.'s injury problems, plus the fact that everyone knew he had to be traded this offseason, would hurt his trade value. So I don't doubt that Colangelo took the best offer on the table... I'm just not sure what the chances are that O'Neal won't be a complete stiff. At least his contract expires in 2 years if nothing else.

If O'Neal stays healthy, Toronto will have a nice "one-two punch in the post" with Bosh and O'Neal trading shots.
