#8After boot camp you get an MOS (military occupation code), basically a "job" you will be sent to that particular school to learn. You can pick a specific job or location while enlisting, but that can be taken away based on performance or lack of performance in boot camp.Originally posted by TR88after you sign up and complete the boot camp, they send you on a mission. You will have the MOS until you get out, if you are needed elsewhere you will be crossed trained and moved. It comes down to where you are needed, basically filling positions.Comment -

#10TR88 just remember, they're NOT going to ask you, but they DON'T want you to tell them, got it? Whatever you are into you are into, that's up to you pal, but no one wants to know, so don't go around yapping about who you think is cute and what you'd like to do to or with whomever, or whom you'd like to do whatever to or with you. Just because they aren't going to ask, does NOT mean they want you to tell.
It's a subtle but important point - got it?Comment -

#11Here's the short answer:Originally posted by TR88after you sign up and complete the boot camp, they send you on a mission. Can you choose where and for how long you go to ? Serious answers only, jokers gtfo!
After boot camp/basic training and your specialty training you're sent to your first duty station (or mission as you state). The normal enlistment for the military is a 4 year hitch and then you can either re-enlist for another hitch or separate from the service. On active duty normally you can't "choose" your duty station, especially your first hitch because they have you by the balls. If you choose to join the National Guard or Reserve you can stay in your home area, because that's where you drill one weekend a month and 2 weeks in the Summer and normally work in your hometown as a teacher, stock broker, etc.
I was an Air Force guy, and I will tell you the Army and Marine recruiters will twist the truth left and right. The key is to remember to NEVER sign anything or raise your right hand until you're damn sure you want to make the commitment.Comment -

#12I was in the air force too. In the USAF you go to techschool after boot camp for your specific AFSC (your job). When your about to complete tech training you will receive orders to your first duty station. From there you begin your on the job training. After you complete that which took me 18months, i was then eligible for deployment. any other questions just ask.Originally posted by firedawgyour job will dictate where you go....

#13When you go to meps to sign your contract, they will give you a couple options of what MOS (job) you would like. After boot, you will go to school for your particular job, which could last anywhere from a couple months to a year. After that, you will be assigned to a permanent duty station, with a Squadren, division, or whatever they have in your field. From there, you go where they do. You really have no say as to where you go for your first 4 years. After that, you can request when you resign, but never have a guarantee.Comment -

#19There's actually a provision/law in the military where a business owner who is stiffed by a military person can petition the base to garnish the wages to get their money....it doesn't stop the problem, but military folks know if they go to collection, etc. their Commander is most likely going to kick their balls in eventually.Originally posted by Sdotboldmilitary dont play around if you dont pay your bills. #21How well you perform on the ASVAB test usually taken at the local National guard base, will give the recruiter an idea what's position you might be able to fill. Basically anybody's qualify for infantry or a combat position, while getting in intelligence or being an MP is more competitive.Comment -

As far as the original question depending on the branch and how bad they want you, you can get your first duty station guaranteed in your contract... This is also something you might be able to do upon reenlisting...Comment
