    $10,000 cash or a master's degree?
As you can get a good quality master's degree for around $10,000 in tuition, what would you rather have?

I'll take the master's degree! A lifetime at a better job is much better than $10,000, imho.

Take the degree and get a job. Within a month you will have the 10 dimes and then next month you can have 10 more.

It's getting to the point....where a four year college degree is pretty much standard. The masters degree is a neccesity.

Depends what you are already doing. Have to consider the opportunity cost of the time off you take to do the Master's.

I do a little time at the cad lab for Penn State advising students on their engineering projects, and it cost about $700 a credit hour there. Multiply that by the 130 that is needed for a regular 4 year degree and you can see how sizable the investment is.

                    There's plenty to choose from:

And, if you're talking about an online degree, there's some pretty prestigious universities offering master's for less than $10k.

People don't realize for a majority of students, that kind of huge financial commitment to a school may be more trouble than it's worth. There's this perception that so long as you go to a great school, you'll always land a great job and be much more comfortable in your life than had you opted for other kinds of work or went to a more affordable school.

Interesting site, all I can go by is what its costing to send a 18 year old freshman to Florida State University this Fall and it runs about 40k a year right now. JMO.

It also helps if you pick a major that will be marketable in the business world. Since I am a slut monger and there aren't many female engineering students, I went to the campus library and talked to some of the chickys there. Some of them have marketable majors such as nursing, but an alarming number of them have useless majors that I can't believe their parents would say yeah go ahead and make me pay $200,000 for the next 4 years for that history of language degree. I don't even know where you would send a resume after graduation for that one. Another one that has limited marketing is an english degree. My mother has a masters in english literature and lucky for her she is still hot so her new husband makes all the dough.

Yes. All education should be solely used for the intent of maximizing financial wealth. And you work for a major university? Scary. No wonder our education system sucks so bad...

I actually work for a tier 1 automotive supplier. I donate time at the University so I can scout new talent. The question is whether you would take the 10 grand or a masters. I'm just pointing out that if your going to college to make some money afterwards, you may want to think about which major you choose. If you are there for the knowledge, well good luck when you get on Jeopardy.

I'll take the master's degree if it means I can quit work, go back to a college campus as a bachelor and live out of my pop's wallet for a couple of years. Otherwise, at this stage in my life, just gimme' the cash.

dude I don't even have a degree right now. I'm making 32k a year and run a business on the side that I reinvest the profits in about 5 years when its paid off it will be a very good deal.

In the mean time this fall I start going back to school to finish an accounting degree, I'm 2 classes from a 2 year degree both are science requirements I have yet to take. So basically in 3 years (taking night classes or online classes) I will have a 4 year degree, and I expect this move to pay itself off in the first year alone...

If I stay at my company I should get anywhere from a 10k to 15k raise a year... More if I go outside but I have a one year restriction on tuition reimbursement.
