#40Fair enough...but you have to give some credence to a current trend that has been consistent all year. Anyway, that was not my only reason for the play, but merely one aspect. Hope all Boston backers cash..good luck!Originally posted by yismanLast year Niemann was easily better at home.
He's only had 5 starts at home this year. Too small of a sample size to claim he struggles at home beyond just random variance.Comment -

#41^ Action what I'm trying to say is that unless he's been that way in past years, you can't extrapolate from 5 starts that he's a better pitcher on the road. Consider that last season, his ERA at home was almost a run and a half lower than on the road.
brosuf that wasn't the play though. That's just what happened.[quote=jjgold;5683305]I win again like usual

#46Too small a sample size to claim he was truly better at home last year. Park factors are the only reason why pitchers' true performances differ by park. Maybe the cowbells made his fastball better?Originally posted by yismanLast year Niemann was easily better at home.

#59My point is that if one were to say he's better on the road, it'd have to be backed up by prior seasons, and it isn't.Originally posted by illfuuptnToo small a sample size to claim he was truly better at home last year. Since he was better at home last year, you can't then say he's now a road pitcher and can't pitch well at home.
Some pitchers do happen to pitch better in certain ballparks (different than the league average), but you need a large pool of evidence to back that up.
Niemann is likely just random variance, considering that he was better at home last season.[quote=jjgold;5683305]I win again like usual

#63No...I know. I never said that he was a better pitcher on the road or at home. All I said is that he has struggled at home this year. Not that he was a bad pitcher at home his entire career. I was pointing out a season trend, not a lifetime trend. I do agree that he will probably regress to his career averages at home for the rest of the year.Originally posted by yisman^ Action what I'm trying to say is that unless he's been that way in past years, you can't extrapolate from 5 starts that he's a better pitcher on the road. Now, let's get at least two runs from Boston in the top of the 11th and go to bed with some extra money in our pockets.

#67OK, why would Francona wait and only now pinch-run for Ortiz? If you ask me, you either do it right away or not at all.
I guess he figured it's a better chance now that he wouldn't need Ortiz in future innings (because the odds of scoring are higher)?[quote=jjgold;5683305]I win again like usual
