Four years of hard work comes down to complete bullshit
At least in hockey they play until there is a winner.
Why not just flip a coin instead of this crap?

You leave the starting 6 in hockey for the whole OT and that game will end shortly.

Yes, a championship game should never end in a shootout. Go to sudden death if you must.
I feel bad for the girls.

Thanks for the update, Flight. I agree with OP btw, why not have the two strongest girls arm wrestle, or something?

I'll be betting USA to win olympics. odds will be better now that they lost this game. Of course they have to qualify first.

Never have understood why the play in extra time in these championship soccer games is not sudden death. Seems odd to me.

olympic hockey goes to shootouts. but i agree with you and think shootouts are complete horsesht and a retarded way to decide a game.
imagine if baseball went to a homerun competition after a few extra innings?

They can't be playing soccer OT for ever. Since game has only 3 permanent subs players will risk injury. And if they know the game will not end in 30 minutes until someone scores they will not play as hard in the beginning of OT knowing there is too much too risk. So the OT will be really boring.

I don't give a damn who won the game. Or maybe I slightly prefer that Japan won so I don't have to hear all the typical post victory bullshit. But the girls are tired??? That's why they should arm wrestle (or something) instead of continuing to play?
It's stupid.

It should be sudden death.

They tried it for 4 years in the 1990's and the fans hated it with passion. The whole idea of soccer OT is that you can come back after conceding a goal because many times the goals are fluke. You have to also remember when this is enforced in NHL is during a 7 game series in the playoffs where a team can come back next game after an unlucky OT loss whereas in soccer OT is one game and you are out. How you would feel if there were no playoffs in NHL and they just play one game to advance to next round and the winner is decided in sudden death OT?

"Just fine" - in answer to the last question. Why not? "Fluke goals" might ruin it? You know at the end of the day it's just a bunch of apes running back and forth across a field and going nowhere, right? That's the game.

That would be fantastic. If many of the few goals actually scored in soccer are a "fluke," that is an indictment of the entire sport, not just the OT setup.
