The disdain for LeBron James is not unique just to Cleveland.
Since he took his talents to a warmer climate, LeBron has taken a huge hit in his popularity, and for the first time in three years, he’s no longer regarded as one of the most popular athletes in the country.
According to a Harris Interactive Poll released on Thursday, LeBron dropped out of the top-10 for the first time since 2008, continuing a decline that has not diminished since “The Decision.”
LeBron was ranked third in 2009 and sixth last year, but winning the Eastern Conference Finals and coming closer than ever to an NBA title was not enough to bring back some fans. The poll, which surveyed 2,163 adults across the country, was conducted soon after the Dallas Mavericks beat the Heat in the NBA Finals.
On the flip side, Derek Jeter’s popularity is at an all-time high, as the Yankees star was selected as America’s favorite athlete for the first time in his career. “The Captain,” who recently joined the 3,000 hit club, has been on the list since 2004, but had never been higher than second.
Jeter’s rise to the top was brought on by Tiger Woods’ continued decline. Tiger vacated the number one ranking for the first time since 2005, dropping to fifth this year.
Michael Jordan, who has not played an NBA game since 2003, still has tremendous popularity, as he tied for third with current basketball star Kobe Bryant.
The overall top-10 list includes:
1. Derek Jeter
2. Peyton Manning
3. Kobe Bryant
4. Michael Jordan
5. Tiger Woods
6. Tom Brady
7. Albert Pujols
8. Hines Ward
9. Derrick Rose
10. Aaron Rodgers
