Shweinsteiger is dominant. Germany needs to do better on Ronaldo - he's cutting them apart. Of course, I'm all in on Portugal basically for my euro 2008 money and my Germans finally show up. Great game so far. I hope Germany doesn't pack it in - Portugal is too good for it to work.

Need Germany to apply the dagger early in the second half. Go up 3-1 and Ronaldo starts to tear up, per his modus operandi. Girly man! LOL!

I am not sure which game you saw or if you even have a clue about soccer but Ronaldo never showed up in the match. Friedrich totally dominated Ronaldo (especially in the first half). Due to Friedrichs attacks Ronaldo was even forced to follow him into Portugals defense. Our team played it pretty clever. We changed our system from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1. That gave us the advanage to neutralize the midfield of Portugal and Ballack had more offensive opportunities. You always have to keep in mind that we played a really really bad game against Croatia. You even can not count our game against Austria. Austria is like Germanys little brother. Their last major win against us was back in Argentina in 1978. They are still dreaming of that win (3-2) and whenever Germany plays Austria they bring that back into each ones mind. The onliest team that had to lose something in that clash was Germany. So there was an enormous pressure on our team. Even a draw would have been a shame. Today our team showed their real face. They were running, attacking, fighting etc etc etc. That is all we are used to since the WC 2006. I never had a doub we could lose this match after I saw our team prior to marching in. They were totally focused on the match and dominated the first half (except for the last 10 minutes). In case someone remembers Schweinsteiger loves playing Portugal (he scored twice at the 3rd place final back in 2006 and once today). At this stage of the tourney you need a world class goalie. Ricardo is not that great to be a match for Lehmann. Lehmann had some problems during the first matches due to the role he had at Arsenal. Now he is back in he game and didn`t make any mistakes today. A team can only be as strong as their goalie is.
Right now there are 100.000s out in the streets celebrating our win. I guess most americans can`t imagine what a win of the national squad means for Europeans or South Americans.

                                                      For tomorrow:
I expect a pretty tough match between Croatia and Turkey. There will definitely be a least one red card in that match. Beckenbauer just said in out German TV:"Let`s see how many players will finish the match."
Turkey has great injury problems. As of today it seems they just have 15 players plus two goalies left for tomorrows match. Usually I would say Croatia wins this match but Turkey is hyped by their win against the Czech Republic.

                                                      Horrible scenario:
In case Turkey wins tomorrow they will face our team in the semifinal. This could cause riots after the match. 1.800.000 Turks are living here in Germany. There are over 200.000 Turks living in Berlin. Many of the younger ones are pretty agressive. I guess you can imagine what will happen in case there will be a match against Turkey. If Germany loses (what is pretty unlikely) many Germany will be pissed by seeing the Turks celebrating their victory and it will be the same way around.

                                                      Most likely scenario:
Germany will face Croatia. Believe me, you can go all in for a German win in that case. Our team won`t lose a second time against Croatia. Loew said he saw it coming that we would lose against Croatia. Something happened with the team prior to that game but Loew did not make that public. I am not sure if you saw how the team celebrated he victory against Portugal. It seems like they totally hyped by what is currently going on in Germany. We have a similar athmosphere here in Germany as we had it for the WC 2006. Everyone is talking about the team and the team knows that it is backed by more than 80.000.000 fans. There is simply too much class in our team that they will lose again.

What game were you watching andy again? Croatia has defense, something Germany clearly doesnt possess. Croatia will annihilate lucky ass Germany.

Poor German team this. Portugal really should have won, but you can't do that if you give away two amateurish setpiece goals. Nice opening goal, but Klose was totally unmarked for the 2nd, and Ricardo was all over the place for the 3rd...... (although that was a really obvious foul by Ballack!).

Germany booked their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2008 by seeing off a below-par Portugal side in Basel.

Bastian Schweinsteiger sidefooted in the first and his free-kick created the second for the head of Miroslav Klose.

Nuno Gomes finished from close range to give Portugal hope, but they failed to defend another Schweinsteiger free-kick and Michael Ballack headed their third.

Portugal substitute Helder Postiga pulled one back in the dying stages but

there was to be no grandstand finish.

Portugal had looked so impressive in qualifying for the knockout stages but Luiz Felipe Scolari's reign ended in disappointing fashion.

Scolari, who takes over as Chelsea boss next month, had suggested their lack of height might be exposed by a physically superior German side.

But it was a failure to defend set-pieces that proved their downfall.

In contrast, Germany gave an accomplished display despite suspended coach Joachim Low having to watch the game from the stands.

They will now face the winners of the Croatia-Turkey quarter-final in the last four and will be strong favourites to progress to the final on this showing.

The selection of Schweinsteiger from the start gave them a spark that was missing from their group games.

Germany's Michael Ballack on his decisive goal

He gave them the lead when he got ahead of Paulo Ferreira to burst into the box and steer home a cross from Lukas Podolski, after he had combined well with Ballack down the left channel.

Germany made it two goals in four minutes when Schweinsteiger's curling free-kick was perfect for Klose to head past Ricardo.

It was Cristiano Ronaldo who looked to be the guilty party in allowing Klose a free run at goal.

The Manchester United winger was unable to influence the game and the 2004 finalists' hopes were dealt a further blow when Joao Moutinho was forced off after half an hour.

It was from Ronaldo's shot that led to Gomes' strike, but it owed more to Deco's bursting run from the edge of his own box.

The Barcelona star released Simao and he found Ronaldo, who was denied by Jens Lehmann only for Gomes to show quickness of mind and feet to turn and fire past Christoph Metzelder's attempted clearance.

It was developing into a wonderfully open game, with both sides continuing the theme of the tournament by committing men forward and playing positive football.

Ballack and then Ronaldo went close just before the break and Pepe should have scored with a close-range header from a corner shortly after the interval.

The match looked headed for an intriguing final half hour, only for Portugal's defence to again go to sleep as Schweinsteiger swung in another pinpoint free-kick.

This time it was Ferreira who lost his man, although Ballack did appear to push his Chelsea team-mate before heading past a stranded Ricardo.

Portugal's momentum was stopped in its tracks and they found themselves restricted to long-range shots as Germany looked to close the game out.

Podolski was a yard away from adding to his three goals at the tournament with a hammer of a left-foot shot.

The game got the thrilling climax that it deserved when Nani crossed for fellow substitute Postiga to head in three minutes from the end.

But there was to be no fairytale ending to Scolari's impressive coaching career with the Portuguese.
