No need to meet the nit wit. I have played with greats like Lindsay, Delvecchio, etc. Lindsay almost tore my asshole open, fell on top of me while I was knocked down in the crease.

jjgold,
first of all, 96% of the posters here have never heard of Guy Lafleur.. Guy played hockey in the 70's..
1- 94% of posters here weren't even born when he played
2- He played hockey, and most posters here are american and dont even watch hockey.
and the ones that are canadian that like hockey, or even american that love hockey, like deucey, dont even care about a guy they never watched.
Isn't guy lafleur the same guy that Sick Gambler loved and was his idol, and wasn't guy lafleur the same guy that russy of majorwager told sick gambler to come to the restaurant because guy lafleur was there and just wanted to set him up to off sick gambler? and you i beleive saved sick gambler from going, as i recall he was getting all dressed up to leave to meet his idol. sick gambler owes you his life jjgold. you read russy pretty well.. you knew he was out to get sick gambler..
good call, jj..

I saw him at his best!
He was getting long in the tooth when I saw hime in the 80's at the old Met Sports center in Bloomington,Minnesota where the Mega Mall now sits. The Canadiens and North Stars really put on a show that night in one of the blood baths of all time.L e fleur was absolutely flying on the ice and the guy was magic.Like Mickey Mantle,Guy had weaknesses in the bottle, women and tobacco that dented his career.I heard he used to smoke in the locker room during periods even.He was the last of the truly great flying French men in a true dynasty. The game has changed so much since then with little open ice and fancy skating and stick handling like Guy did.

Yep, Brentcrude, he was a heavy smoker. I've heard that at one time in his playing days it was 2 packs a day.

brenty, i can't say i have been more impressed here by any post than yours. how does a guy from minnesota, a non canadian, with a ron jeremy avatar, know so much about The Flower.
well, you were right, but i will tell you more things about him.. yes, he did smoke in between periods, but not only that, he smoked 3 packs a day, and was a raging alcoholic.. he hung out in bars 6 days a week drinking, and hardly trained.. he was by far the habs best player in their history, even better than the Rocket, and 2nd most popular player in habs history, right behind the rocket. boy was he exciting to watch with the hair flying back when he was skating down the wing letting that terrific slap shot from 40 feet out, right upstairs, top shelf.
i am certain no one else will care about this post here, but it's great to know that you know this much about him.
he was great..

well, they beat the Rangers in the CUP in 79, but you are probably talking about the semi finals against the Bruins, when Lafleur tied it in Game 7 with just over 1 min to go with a 40 foot slapshot, to put it into OT, and then eventually win the game.

To many men on the ice was the call, lafleur scored then Yvon Lambert in OT.
classic game, loved the Cheevers mask,I hustled tickets in front of the forum
back in them days.
Nicky believe me when i tell you, calling lafleur "by far the best habs player in history" is at best your opinion.plante, harvey, beliveau,richard1, richard2, Robinson, gainey, cournyer, moore, dryden,et c etc.
As far as popularity is concerned, your close here, but there is no doubt
by far #1 Rocket Richard.......#2 By even a larger distance is Jean Beliveau #3 is LAFLEUR.
Other then that you know your sshit

yer memory is good , mine isnt so i looked it up. I know it was the bruins so you are rite it was the semi's. here is the game from wiki
Boston Bruins vs. Montreal Canadiens
Game seven of the Montreal-Boston Semifinal is perhaps one of the most memorable in the history of the NHL. About a minute and a half after Boston's Rick Middleton scored with four minutes remaining in the third period to give the Bruins a 4–3 lead, linesman John D'Amico called a bench minor for too many men on the ice against the Bruins. Montreal's Guy Lafleur scored on the ensuing power play, sending the game to overtime where Yvon Lambert gave the Canadiens the win and a trip to their fourth straight Stanley Cup final.

it was one of the most memorable habs games of all time.. how can i forget it.. What an incredible shot by Guy Lafleur.. a 40 foot slap shot from the wing with hardly no angle.. with about 1 min left to tie it. it seemed like it was all over, till Jacques Lemaire made a drop pass to GUY who fired it in the far side..
This is the game that made Don Cherry famous. It was the best thing that ever happened to him. When the penalty was called, he stood up on the bench and waived his 2 hands to the crowd laughing, then habs tied it and later on won it and went on later to win the cup..
robby,
you're a little kid, you're only 25.. too bad you dont remember seeing Guy.. man, was he great.. when he carried the puck with full steam and the hair flying back, it was priceless. there's no player today more exciting to watch than Guy was. not even ovechkin.

Nicky do you remember one of the first times the Russians came over and the NHL alstars played them with Lafluer and Clarke at Center? I think we got drilled 6-0 or something like that. I think that moment change hockey and it was the rise of the ussr.

i remember an even better one. The Russians came to play NHL teams and when they played in Philadelphia, the russians refused to come back on the ice after the period because they were scared. the flyers were hammering the russians with checks and playing very dirty.
today, you will never see this anymore. the russians are much stronger now and can handle any rough play in the NHL.

From what I remember hearing him say at the time, he came back so his son could see him play hockey. He didn't like the fact that his son couldn't make the connection between seeing him on tape and understanding what his father had done. He was just a shadow of his former greatness when he returned but still I remember it was pretty remarkable to see him back at all at that time.

I was gonna say that one since i live close to Philly. If i remember it right the Soviets beat all the NHL teams until the Flyers drilled them.
