Can a person live on just welfare?

I've seen section 8 homes (govt paid) that are pretty nice in my town, seen tons of ppl pulling out their EBT cards and getting the same food (usually much better) than I get for nothing. My question is this, why would anyone work all day at McDs for 8 bucks an hour for 30 hours a week and get 200 take home and disqualify themselves from welfare that would be of equal value, if this is the case McDs workers are basically working for free.

Can they just claim no job and get a nice free apartment, free food (not govt cheese but the same food everyone else buys with their paychecks) all for doing absolutely nothing, if so why work? Or are they getting these benefits on top of their paycheck at McDs so thats why they work (income not high enough to disqualify them). If this is the case a McDs worker that makes 15k a year + gets roughly 700 free rent/month + 200 free food/month is actually making around 26k a year, when you throw in an EIC credit at tax time for another grand they are making 27k a year tax free, equivalent to a normal job making 30k a year (at 15% tax rate less deductions would be taxed around 3000). Never thought about it but the cashier at McDs is making more after welfare benefits than many "decent" jobs if this is the case and jobs making over 30k are getting harder and harder to find in this economy.

Welfare really makes no sense to me, is there like a time limit or in this country can you basically say **** it and just live off the government as long as you like? If so why are there any homeless ppl, are they just too ignorant/crazy to file for their welfare benefits?

Anyway just food for thought, next time you go into McDs dont feel bad for the ghetto black behind the counter, after benefits hes probably making more than you are

As a single person it would be tough to get welfare. You would have to have no job and zero money in the bank. What ever you got it wouldn't be much probably not even 300 a month. No way you can live on that.

Exactly and they used to house ppl in projects which were just hellholes so at least it would provide some slight motivation to get a job and move out but now they sec 8 pretty much everywhere, so you got a guy slaving away 50 hours a week to pay his 800/month rent and avoid eviction while the guy in the apartment next to him plays Playstation all day and knocks up hos at night on sec 8, sells some drugs and buys a new SUV with the profits then goes to the grocery store and buys 300 bucks worth of crab legs with his EBT card

I dont hate the poor, many good ppl in this country are poor especially in this economy, however I disagree with ppl making a career out of welfare. Some people stay on on welfare for a lifetime. I say a documentary on a women who was raised in 3 generations of welfare. She was like you basically have a kid with a different daddy every 18 years til your 49. Then you'll qualify for social security.
