and to answer your original question in a brief nut shell:

win
place - u win if it comes in 1st or 2nd
show - 1st 2nd or 3rd (pays shit tho)
exacta/exactor/perfecta - have to pick the horses to finish 1st and 2nd together
trifecta/triactor - same as above but 1st 2nd and 3rd
superfecta - same but 1st thru 4th
pentefecta/hi-five/super hi-five/ - 1st thru 5th

u can 'Box' all these I.E. place a $1 exacta box bet horse #3 and #5. the ticket will cost $2 but if it comes in 5-3 or 3-5 u win. same principal for the other bets but they cost more b/c theres more combinations.

u can do as many horses in the box that you want but again it will cost more. $1 exacta box #3, #5, #7, #9 will cost $12 but any 2 of those 4 horses can run 1st and 2nd and you win. also if you ever see the term "quinella" its essentially the same as an exacta box

then there are pick 3's pick4's pick5's/6's, daily doubles, but if you want help with those i'll gladly explain them for ya
