The old saying is that a coach wants 110% percent effort is pretty much a crock in my book.Once you get to a pro skill level, that ra ra ra crap doesn't do you much good in baseball especially and to a certain extent basketball and hockey somewhat. The more games you have in a season the less 100% output you can give. The Vince Lombardi style of coaching wouldn't work in today's pro sports world.
Sure, there are the little things like running out grounders to 1st etc.where one chance in 50 might work out in your favor to get on base and score a crucial run you wouldn't have had if you hadn't hustled. Then you might tear a hammy doing it all the time so it has a negative impact to over exert yourself.
The talent you put on the field, rink or floor is pretty much what's going to win you games and there isn't allot of difference in pro sports except football these days between talent level.I went to a Detroit Red Wings game during the season and of course they didn't have the intensity they do in the playoffs but even so,it was pretty much a solidly played error free game by both teams and the Wings beat the Wild by a goal.If the Wings of season play matched up against the playoff Wings, the playoff Wings would probably go 4-3 in a 7 game series.
So who here thinks like me where this ** Laren manager for the Mariners taking food, beer and even now towels out of the club house is barking up the wrong tree thinking that will work to get his team winning? If you can get moderate self discipline out of your team where they aren't yahoos off the field and put in solid heads up effort on the field, that's about all you can ask from a team.
