OBAMA SELLING OUT ALREADY, says Israeli Peace Activist
Uri Avnery is a former Israeli soldier, a three-term member of the Israeli Knesset, and a longtime Israeli activist for just and fair treatment of Israel's Palestinian neighbors.

This is the first part of his article. The rest is online.

    No, Obama Can't!

    by Uri Avnery

After months of a tough and bitter race, a merciless struggle, Barack Obama has defeated his formidable opponent, Hillary Clinton. He has wrought a miracle: for the first time in history a black person has become a credible candidate for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world.

And what was the first thing he did after his astounding victory? He ran to the conference of the Israel lobby, AIPAC, and made a speech that broke all records for obsequiousness and fawning.

That is shocking enough. Even more shocking is the fact that nobody was shocked.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a triumphalist conference. Even this powerful organization had never seen anything like it. Seven thousand Jewish functionaries from all over the United States came together to accept the obeisance of the entire Washington elite, which came to kowtow at their feet. All three presidential hopefuls made speeches, trying to outdo each other in flattery. Three hundred senators and members of Congress crowded the hallways. Everybody who wants to be elected or reelected to any office, indeed everybody who has any political ambitions at all, came to see and be seen.

The Washington of AIPAC is like the Constantinople of the Byzantine emperors in its heyday.

The world looked on and was filled with wonderment. The Israeli media was ecstatic. In all the world's capitals the events were followed closely and conclusions were drawn. All the Arab media reported on them extensively. Al-Jazeera devoted an hour to a discussion of the phenomenon.

The most extreme conclusions of professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt were confirmed in their entirety. On the eve of their visit to Israel, this coming Thursday, the Israel lobby stood at the center of political life in the U.S. and the world at large.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why, actually? Why do the candidates for the American presidency believe that the Israel lobby is so absolutely essential to their being elected?

The Jewish votes are important, of course, especially in several swing states that may decide the outcome. But African-Americans have more votes, and so do the Hispanics. Obama has brought to the political scene millions of new young voters. Numerically, the Arab-Muslim community in the U.S. is also not an insignificant factor.

Some say that Jewish money speaks. The Jews are rich. Perhaps they donate more than others for political causes. But the myth about all-powerful Jewish money has an anti-Semitic ring. After all, other lobbies, and most decidedly the huge multinational corporations, have given considerable sums of money to Obama (as well as to his opponents). And Obama himself has proudly announced that hundreds of thousands of ordinary citizens have sent him small donations, which have amounted to tens of millions.

True, it has been proven that the Jewish lobby can almost always block the election of a senator or a member of Congress who does not dance – and do so with fervor – to the Israeli tune. In some exemplary cases (which were indeed meant to be seen as examples) the lobby has defeated popular politicians by lending its political and financial clout to the election campaign of a practically unknown rival.

    But in a presidential race?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The transparent fawning of Obama on the Israel lobby stands out more than similar efforts by the other candidates.

Why? Because his dizzying success in the primaries was entirely due to his promise to bring about a change, to put an end to the rotten practices of Washington and to replace the old cynics with a young, brave person who does not compromise his principles.

And lo and behold, the very first thing he does after securing the nomination of his party is to compromise his principles. And how!

The outstanding thing that distinguishes him from both Hillary Clinton and John McCain is his uncompromising opposition to the war in Iraq from the very first moment. That was courageous. That was unpopular. That was totally opposed to the Israel lobby, all of whose branches were fervidly pushing George Bush to start the war that freed Israel from a hostile regime.

And here comes Obama to crawl in the dust at the feet of AIPAC and go out of his way to justify a policy that completely negates his own ideas.

Some people in society and the world are treated more equally than others.I don't like the Jews that constantly come up with that they are the chosen people business. The more you are in a special interest group whether it be a union, farmers,AARP,Jewish, black or other minority groups that get results from politicians handing them goodies, the more these groups act cocky saying they deserve special treatment because they are special.

If you don't choose to belong to a special interest group or aren't allowed into being classified as belonging to a special interest group that gets protected and looked out for,the more SOL and humble you will be in this country.

Be real! Obama has to sell out to the Israelis! The Israeli's will murder Obama f he talks about peace to much! They already assasinated their own prime minster in the 90s because he tried to make a peace agreement.

Most Americans don't have a clue that the Jewish lobby is the most powerful lobby in America. And they don't have a clue that the Israeli political and business leaderes don't want peace because they make a lot of money with continuing war. But Obama isn't stupid. He understands reality

What we need to do is pray that the Israelis don't assasinate Obama. Because they could care less about how much damage it would do to America. The only thing they care about is keeping their armed conflict going so they continue taking more land from the paletinians and making more money and getting more money from the U.S.

Just look at what happened last Friday. One of their cabinet ministers proudly said that they would bomb Iran and he didn't give a damn that his comments caused the biggest one-day rise in Oil price in history!

It began as just another exercise in political academic wackiness at Hebrew University. A graduate student there claimed that the absence of any history of rapes of Arab women by Israeli soldiers proves that Jews are racists and oppressors, people who do not even regard Arab women as sexually desirable. The student at the Mount Scopus campus and her “research” were then awarded a university honor for these impressive “discoveries.”

Facing a storm of public outrage, the president of Hebrew University, Prof. Menachem Magidor, and the Rector, Prof. Haim D. Rabinowitch, jointly issued an announcement defending the student and dismissing those who expressed outrage over the contents of the thesis.

The matter has become the worst recent scandal in Israeli academia, rivaling last year’s “Toaff Affair” in which a now-retired professor at Bar-Ilan University published “research” alleging that medieval Jews used gentile blood for ceremonial purposes.

I have read the entire rape thesis in Hebrew (you can too, if you read Hebrew, at www.upfree.net/3100688). It is a disgrace and an embarrassment for all of Israeli academia. Tal Nitzan was a graduate student in anthropology at Hebrew University. Her thesis was supervised by anthropology professor Eyal Ben Ari and Dr. Edna Lomsky-Feder. The thesis was, evidently, also supported by anthropology professor Zali Gurevitch, head of the Shaine Center, who defended it to the media and made the decision to honor it.

Nitzan’s thesis is largely a collection of tiresome feminist rhetoric and postmodernist gibberish, not all of it related to rape. Nitzan begins by noting that one should distinguish between organized military rape directly ordered by authorities as a matter of policy, such as in the Bosnian wars, and individual acts of rape by soldiers, which she labels with the nonsensical term “symptomatic rape.”

She asserts that the first kind of rape is a form of political policy, whereas the latter kind (the “symptomatic”) is a “direct result of the blurring of social divisions and ethnic-gender barriers.”

She confirms that the first form of organized rape has never been the policy of the Israeli army but says the second form, individual “symptomatic rape,” has replaced the former as a method of humiliation and oppression of Arabs, even when – especially when – Israeli Jewish soldiers do not do it at all.

In short, she concludes that by not raping Arab women, Jews show just how racist they really are.

Nitzan argues that abstaining from rape is just as inhumane and oppressive as “symptomatically raping” and in fact replaces it because it just serves to reinforce the intolerance felt toward Arabs by Jewish soldiers, who think of Arabs as so inferior and horrid that they do not even feel a compulsion to rape them. Really. While giving some shallow lip service to how the “question” of rape refusal is “very complex,” Nitzan’s own “answer” is quite simple and straightforward – it reflects Jewish racism against Arabs.

Israel, you see, is so racist and anti-Arab that abstaining from rape is part and parcel of its determination to enforce rigid “lines of division.” She asserts that individual soldiers who refuse to rape represent an intentional policy of oppression roughly similar to when governments order mass rape, because in both cases the “policy” serves to subordinate and dehumanize the oppressed victim population.

The thesis draws its “scientific” conclusions from interviews with 25 reserve soldiers, ages 23-32, who served as combat troops in the “occupied territories” during the intifada. None of the comments by any of these soldiers supports or provides any confirmation, even the most indirect, to any of the lunatic conclusions reached by Nitzan.

Most of the interviewees’ comments concern the day-to-day tactics and experiences of the soldiers. Nitzan asked them why no Arab women are raped by Israeli troops. Their responses varied, ranging from assertions of ethical awareness to effective disciple. Some noted the presence of reporters or of NGO groups in the areas of conflict.

But since when is interviewing 25 random soldiers a scientific way to go about answering the question? The soldiers are neither social scientists nor criminologists. How an MA degree could be awarded to anyone on the basis of her having conducted 25 such interviews is one of the mysteries that Hebrew University authorities have yet to explain. The thesis is totally devoid of statistical analysis or empirical testing.

The words “terror” and “terrorist” do not appear even once in the entire thesis. From reading the thesis one would have no idea that Israeli military actions in the “territories” have anything to do with suicide bombers and terrorist murderers. This political bias and open political propagandizing should have been more than enough for the thesis to have been rejected altogether as pseudo-research. Instead, it got a prize.

The possibility that Israeli soldiers do not rape Arab women because they are simply decent and honorable people, or under effective command by decent and honorable people, is something Nitzan obviously dismisses.

As mentioned above, when reports about the Nitzan thesis began to circulate, the heads of Hebrew University issued a statement. It reads, in part: “IDF soldiers are not involved in raping and other atrocities common to other armies, and Ms. Nitzan examined a number of explanations for this proper behavior. It seems that the source, on which the media reports were based, either did not read the thesis or used sentences that were taken out of context[emphasis in original statement]. Below please find excerpts from her work (both in the original Hebrew and the English translation, side by side), providing possible explanations for the question why the Israeli army is not involved in rapes.”

This was followed by three brief citations from the Nitzan thesis. Sure enough, nothing in the three selections, all taken out of context, is particularly outrageous or anti-Israel. They are almost the only three that are not outrages. Nearly the entire thesis is dedicated to proving that Jews are racists for not raping Arabs.

Not a single feminist organization anywhere has spoken up about this notion that it is racist when Jews do not rape Arabs. But the most outrageous aspect of the entire scandal is the behavior of the heads of Hebrew University, defending and endorsing this “research” and proving that their institution, despite one of its retired professors having won a Nobel Prize, has jettisoned academic standards and lost interest in seeking academic excellence.
