What Is Your Official Chess Rating?
Mathdotcom started an interesting thread recently about betting on chess. This may have been done before but I am curious to know what is YOUR official chess rating (USCF, CFC, FIDE, etc.)?

    I'll go first.

CFC 1680 (equal to about 1780 USCF depending on who you ask) and unofficially 1900 at ICC for standard games (not online at the moment though).

I don't play chess, however I did have a fairly nice marble set which was given as a gift.

People bet on this? I had a friend who bet on women's cricket and I thought THAT WAS "Chairman for GA" material.

I don't play either. Tried to get into it a few years back, was just too boring. So I guess my rating is zero.

Biggest waste of time ever, the best chess players in history memorized all their moves and win simply by repetition, fukin idiots spend their lifetime remembering past games for nothing more than to win a board game, good use of your time . The chess computers today are better than any player that has ever lived.

This is not true. You memorize opening moves, not an entire game. You obviously don't like chess.

I dont compete anymore. When under 20 you got a lot of free trips for being decent.

2190 CFC (changed rating by about 10 pts so u cant look me up )

Lots of idiots memorize opening lines then don't have a clue how to play after they're "out of book". Noone memorizes games from start to finish because the odds of following a game exactly are slim to none.

Some of the top players in the world don't know much theory. Computers are too strong now for a human to consistently beat, but a solid player like Kramnik still won't lose to a top computer.

Untrue, you must not have played chess in awhile, computers nowadays would pwn any "world champ" that was dumb enough to ruin his record/image by playing one.

                                  You're way off.
Kasparov lost to Deep Blue, but that was a fishy result. Since then, he has never lost a match to a computer, many of which were much better than Deep Blue.

Kramnik has played at least one match against Fritz and has yet to lose a match against any computer. The types who are getting crushed by computers are the Michael Adams and Shirovs who play such a tactical style, playing right into the computers' hands.

In November-December 2006, World Champion Vladimir Kramnik played Deep Fritz. This time the computer won, the match ended 2-4. Kramnik was able to view the computer's opening book. In the first five games Kramnik steered the game into a typical "anti-computer" positional contest. He lost one game (overlooking a mate in one), and drew the next four. In the final game, in an attempt to draw the match, Kramnik played the more aggressive Sicilian Defence and was crushed.

My bad, you are right. Forgot about that match. As an excuse:

Kramnik overlooked a mate in 1 in a position he was going to draw easily. He lost the last game only because he had to play aggressively for a win to tie the match.

I'd definitely put any amount of $$ on a top computer not to lose a match to anyone these days, but for the most part, the top solid players can draw the great majority of their games vs. computers.

A lot of solid GMs online can even draw them in blitz games (5 3 type time controls). Just because computers are so dominant doesn't really change the attractiveness of the game. If an amazing robot could pitch no-hitters every game, would that kill baseball? Checkers has been solved but people still play it.

You could say that about anything.

I spent thousands of hours working on basketball skills growing up. But I never got big enough, bottom line. Even if I did, so what? I was never going to go anywhere with it. It was recreation. Now my knees & ankles are shot and I've got nothing to show for it. I wish I'd never picked up a ball.

My effective chess rating is probably around 1600 USCF, which is an "average" club player. I haven't played a USCF tounament in over a decade, so it's hard to say for sure. When I occasionally re-up a two week trial for ICC, my rating sticks around 1700 taking all-comers. Of course I have groomed ICC ratings up over 2000, carefully picking opponents, but that's just childish.

I've wasted my share of time on chess, but I've wasted much more time watching sports on TV. At least chess forces rational thought, perhaps increasing a certain intellectional awareness. Watching sports on TV has to do the opposite, IMHO, especially if one pays any attention to the commentary. If I was to list ways I've wasted time throughout my life, chess is way down the list behind watching TV, drinking, working dead end jobs, etc.

bettilimbroke999, no offense, but what kind of recreational activities are you involved with? Softball league? Darts? Pool? Alcohol? Hookers? What do you do? What is it that chess is far beneath you, in your life?
