It seems that Gina Carano fans will have to continue to wait to see her back in the cage as Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker revealed today during a conference call for June 18th’s Strikeforce: Overeem Vs Werdum event that the popular fighter has had to withdraw from her bout with Sarah D’Alelio.
The exact reason for Carano being unable to fight is unclear at this moment in time with Coker simply stating that she had not been medically cleared by her doctor.
“I know she’s really disappointed. We talked to her representatives,” Coker revealed, adding later, “We just don’t have any other further information on Gina.”
Coker read out a statement from Carano in which he expressed her hopes for a quick return to action.
“I’m disappointed not to be fighting June 18. I’d like to thank Greg Jackson … and I hope this is just a brief setback.”
While Carano’s absence from the card is a major blow given that Strikeforce have been waiting for almost two years to get her back into action, they have fallen lucky in the sense that for a change she wasn’t the main focus of attention at this show, and due to the stacked nature of it, there’s more than a few replacements waiting to fill the spot she leaves on the main card.
In fact Coker reveals that they already have an excellent replacement for the fight.
“It’s an unfortunate situation, and we’ll be moving forward with the KJ Noons-(Masvidal) fight,” he said.
Given that Noons Vs Masvidal is a fight that is expected to determine who will face lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez next it’s perhaps fitting that it will now be thrown into the spotlight of the main Showtime broadcast card.
