yes they are good for that, but when people are spending 1000$ on a macbook for school that is so stupid, i mean if you are going to fork out 1000$ for a laptop, atleast compare what you can get elsewhere for 1000$. Linux is great, I used to run Redhat on a small partition on my desktop

well you probably have no argument to me saying that for a student buying a mac is a terrible investment, you pay 1000$ and can get much better components in a non-apple computer. Or, if you are happy with the power of the regular macbook then you can get a similar windows machine for half the cost.

one thing i dislike is how all the buttons are meshed together at the bottom, can they be separated out like in old windows?

Brock, right click on the bottom task bar, change the setting Taskbar buttons to "combine when taskbar is full"
Also you can change them to small icons
