It's funny you bring that up. My seven year old has been raised to hate the Boston Celtics as well as the ucla Bruins (I graduated from USC). So, when he heard me rooting for the "Boston" "Bruins" he was confused and pissed. Even though the actual players are from various countries.........I tried explaining the "USA" based team verse the team from "Canada". He was having none of it.

Clearly, most of the Bruins roster is Canadian. There is no disputing that. Although, Thomas is American, Seidenberg is German, and Chara is from Czechoslovakia. When people say they are rooting for Bruins because of a "USA v. Canada", i do not think they mean that they are rooting for individual players. Rather, they are rooting for the American based team, regardless of the region of the players (e.g. germany, usa, canada, czechoslovakia). Because the team is an American based team... i think that's why people feel it's a US v. Canada, despite the majority of bruins players being Canadian.

So, sure. the players are mostly canadian. However, the team is an American team. They are rooting for the American team not the American players.

As a Yankees, Giants, Jets and Rangers fan, I'm confused as to why I'm rooting for the Bruins. It might be because they're an original 6 team or because it will be good for hockey popularity in the states. Something we desperately need.
