I didn't see this one coming. Although you know he'll be back fighting at some point, because boxers always do.

Welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. retires

Unbeaten welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr. has announced his retirement again, with boxing’s unofficial pound-for-pound king saying he no longer has the passion necessary to fight.

Mayweather, the WBC welterweight champion, made the announcement in a letter to select media members Friday. The 31-year-old former U.S. Olympian (39-0, 25 KOs) hasn’t fought since beating Ricky Hatton in December, but was widely expected to fight Oscar De La Hoya in September in a rematch of the richest fight in boxing history.

“This decision was not an easy one for me to make, as boxing is all I have done since I was a child,” said Mayweather, the son and nephew of three of the sport’s top trainers. “However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport.”

5Dimes was already hanging that line (DLH rematch). Is this some sort of PR move?

This is just hype nothing more. He'll magically "come out of retirement" for "one last hurrah".

Golden Boy well tapped dry marketing wise or something? That set all kinds of PPV records.

I was amazed he made 50 million of the De La Hoya fight. One fight he made that much money, unreal. I figure he will be back. If anyone could blow through all the money he made. It is Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr.

I wonder if he really is so loose with his money, that's certainly his image and I know he's got some badass cars and a slick crib, but he always struck me as a smart guy. He's a showman, he's marketed himself very very well.

He will be declaring bankruptcy within the next few years and will be back in the ring.

Another Rumored Big Fight: Floyd Mayweather Jr. Vs Juan Manuel Marquez

It has been rumored that the Pretty Boy and Dinamita are set to take the stage on July 18 at a catch weight of 145 lbs. Now, doesn't that get your adrenaline pumping?

According to most boxing sites I've read, money was never the issue for this fight to take place. The only thing that is under negotiation is the weight. Juan Manuel Marquez doesn't want to move up to 147 and Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn't want to go down to 140.

That's why a catch weight of 145 lbs. has been proposed. And I really do hope this fight gets done. How rare is it that we get to see two excellent boxers going at each other?

Looking at the tale of the tape, Floyd Mayweather Jr. stands at 5'8" while Juan Manuel Marquez is 5'7". There's just an inch that separates the two.

And when it comes to their weight, I don't think that Floyd will have any difficulty moving down even to 140, as his body is not that big compared to Miguel Cotto, although Floyd has some lean muscles.

When it comes to styles, they are both defensive fighters as Juan Manuel Marquez is known to be the best counter puncher in his division and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a solid defense as well, with his shoulder rolls and great footwork.

And talk about power. They can both pack a punch, but we have yet to see if Marquez can carry his power up to welterweight. Marquez has recently knocked out Casamayor and Diaz, while Mayweather put down Hatton in his last fight.

If this gets done, I'll be rooting for Marquez. Juan Manuel Marquez will be the underdog here. But my prediction on the outcome is different.

I am predicting this to be a tactical fight in the earlier rounds, with Floyd using his speed and strength in the second half to come away with a TKO win around the 10th round.

Why would floyd fight Marquez when he would make a mint fighting hatton again (if he beats Pacman) or an epic fight with Pac?
